I'm about to (finally) decommission my last bare metal server (for my personal use). It's a Dedibox I ordered (I had to dug in my mails) the 12th of July 2017.

It served me good, it never failed me. It has always rebooted.

You've been a good server, sd-126200 .

If you're worried about where to host your data in Europe, remember that not all EU member states are created equal when it comes to encryption keys disclosure laws.

See the **Key Disclosure Law** page on Wikipedia[1] - the legislation that requires individuals to hand over cryptographic keys to law enforcement.

My top pick:
- Germany
- Iceland
- Belgium (see note on WP)
- Switzerland (yet)

Would anyone be willing to give me some Wordpress advice? A guy *claiming* to be from Bluehost just called and said my hosted site has malware, then offered me $360/yr protection plan. Refused to say anything about where malware was located or how to fix. Jerk. Bluehost is too expensive already and I'm toying with just pulling the plug on my site altogether (it's not very popular), or maybe porting it over to the $4/month (?) version at wordpress.com. I'd be grateful for any tips on removing malware, finding cheaper host, and whether terminating a blog makes sense. #wordpress #malware #hosting #blog

Since the subject came up I thought I would shill my #hosting company. They have 24/7 chat support so they are always there. They are 300% green.

I have the Premium plan which is $25/month, but that is one of their more expensive plans. It has unlimited domains and emails. I started on a cheaper plan that was only $15 a month, but that too has unlimited domains and emails. Plans start at $3/month. You can also upload #github scripts for #selfhosting.

The Cubanization of Servers: How Tariffs Might Freeze the Hosting Industry in Time

In the streets of Havana, American cars from the 1950s still chug along, lovingly maintained for decades despite their age: Ford Fairlanes and Falcons, Pontiacs and Studebakers, Bel Airs and Stylelines, as well as FIATs and Alfa Romeos, Mercedes-Benz SLs and Volkswagen Karmann-Ghias, and Soviet-era Ladas and Volgas.

It’s not that Cubans have an island-wide classic car fetish. These “Yank tanks” are the product of ingenuity in the face of scarcity. Cuba, under decades of U.S. sanctions, couldn’t import new cars or parts, so it preserved what it had.

A similar phenomenon may be emerging in the world of web hosting, where rising tariffs and global supply chain disruptions are pushing providers toward holding onto aging server hardware far longer than usual. The “Cubanization” of servers may be a looming reality.

LowEndBox · The Cubanization of Servers: How Tariffs Might Freeze the Hosting Industry in TimeOn the island nation of Cuba, cars from the 1940s and 1950s dominate the landscape. This isn't due to passionate classic car enthusiasm. We might see similar adaptations to scarcity coming to a LowEnd hosting provider near you.

I've been pretty happy with NearlyFreeSpeech for web #hosting and was going to save them to the end of the #Divest #Reroute , but the fact remains that they *are* in the US and I will want to move my stuff to the EU eventually anyway. Plus, there's no straighforward way to record my web hosting payments as a business expense when I'm hosting through them. So I'm looking again. Tips?

I discovered a new scam today through one of my clients. Some of you may already know about it but even if this info helps 1 person it's worth it.

So heres how it happened.

I'm hosting a number of clients, so I go in and check their domains on a regular basis. I find one domain that is expiring soon, (Registered elsewhere) so I contact the client.

Decision was made. I’ll move my #homelab domains from #Cloudflare to #Infomaniak. One by one upon reaching each renewal deadline. #Cloudflare is a little bit cheaper, but has a lot of stuff I’m not using and/or don’t want. #Infomaniak gives limited free email service with each domain and is #european. Also #infomaniak feels more like a good old web hosting with a modern UI, good documentation and additional perks. I like it so far.
The only #Cloudflare thing I’ll miss is an almost instant DNS records update considering how many ISPs and services rely on 1.1.1.1.
