Charlotte<p>Coming back to this: I built a little doorbell chime setup, using MQTT from the doorbell to trigger a client running on a raspberry pi to play a chime sound via PulseAudio and an external speaker.</p><p>Also today the dishwasher repair man very kindly fixed the dishwasher, but tripped the electrical breaker on the ground floor while testing the old/broken drain pump, so I got to watch my chime service watch the MQTT broker go offline, and then kubernetes redeployed it to the servers running upstairs where the power was still on.</p><p>It's a symphony of nerd 🤓 😂 </p><p><a href="https://toot.dusepo.co.uk/tags/homelab" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>homelab</span></a> <a href="https://toot.dusepo.co.uk/tags/homeautomation" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>homeautomation</span></a></p>

Pete Keen<p>Building everything statically lets me emulate a really powerful Kubernetes controller like external-dns with a three line ERB template: <a href="https://github.com/peterkeen/homelab/blob/main/dns/local_ingress.js.erb" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="ellipsis">github.com/peterkeen/homelab/b</span><span class="invisible">lob/main/dns/local_ingress.js.erb</span></a></p><p>Of course I don't get the dynamic rebalancing and reconciling that Kubernetes is built for, but ultimately that complexity is what burnt me too many times. Super powerful, super sharp edge cases.</p><p><a href="https://hachyderm.io/tags/homelab" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>homelab</span></a> <a href="https://hachyderm.io/tags/selfhosted" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>selfhosted</span></a></p>
Pete Keen<p>If you're interested in how any/all of this works, I put a snapshot of my current config up here: <a href="https://github.com/peterkeen/homelab" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="">github.com/peterkeen/homelab</span><span class="invisible"></span></a></p><p>The core idea is something along the lines of "static service discovery". The hosts.yml file defines what each box runs. Services that need to talk to other services can inspect the config as a whole at build time using ERB templates and some helpers.</p><p>A good example is the local-proxy config: <a href="https://github.com/peterkeen/homelab/blob/main/stacks/local-proxy/proxy.conf.erb" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="ellipsis">github.com/peterkeen/homelab/b</span><span class="invisible">lob/main/stacks/local-proxy/proxy.conf.erb</span></a></p><p>The `this_host_web_configs` helper yields to the block for every `x-web` config found in a stack located on the currently-in-scope machine.</p><p><a href="https://hachyderm.io/tags/HomeLab" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>HomeLab</span></a> <a href="https://hachyderm.io/tags/selfhosted" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>selfhosted</span></a></p>

Mauricio Teixeira 🇺🇸🇧🇷<p>Wow. Talk about a missed opportunity (or weird business strategy, whatever): Unifi just released their own UPS. It has to be connected to the network. It has an internal NUT server. It can tell the UnifiOS to shutdown when the battery runs out.</p><p>BUT, and this where I sincerely think they missed the mark: it does NOT provide on/off control of each individual outlets. Which means, you still need to buy their bulky and expensive smart PDU.</p><p>Seriously?
