is there any VPS provider more chad than #Contabo ?? arcanechat.me VPS went down today, the VPS will simply fail to start from the Control Panel, this WAY TOO OFTEN happens during weekends or holidays, their status page says nothing about any problems or maintenance, and if you try to write to support they will tell you "sorry it is weekend, your message will not even be stored" so I guess arcanechat.me will be down the whole weekend >:-/

I run @centos@fosstodon.org Stream 9 on a #VPS server (and have done so for several years, now). I use the server to host vanity-domains' web sites and, especially, email for my mother, my wife and myself (used to be more than that, but dad died and several friends ultimately decided that they were ok with @gmail.com domains).

At any rate, it's been an, uh, "adventure". Over time, some RPMs stop being updatable. Other RPMs seem to break things when they update. One of the "seem to break things" frequent-flyer RPMs is
named's.

As part of running vanity domains, I run my own
named server on my VPS. For security reasons, I run the named service chrooted. Every few updates, the RPMs will break the service's startup by changing ownerships or permissions in key directories used by the named service. While, like today's service-breaking ownership-change, I noticed the problem before rebooting, I often don't immediately notice. Usually something like a "why's email not coming in" message from my mom or wife will tip me off that (ultimately) named has failed to start (for one reason or another).

I didn't have these problems under prior (i.e., non "Stream") CentOS releases. I'm hoping that come time to update to EL 10, that my VPS-provider will have images for either
@almalinux@fosstodon.org or @rockylinux@fosstodon.org. It's (obviously) my further hope that one of those distros will prove to be more reliable than CentOS Stream 9 ever was.

I started my own pastebin solution a few years ago to share snippets with my colleagues. I ordered a VPS, deployed Sticky Notes and PostgreSQL. I wrote a client in Perl (for learning purpose) and my manager wrote the client in Go. It's easy to use and it was fun. We started to share snippets then more and more people did the same.

From day 1, the service was a side project without any guarantee of availability and security, even if I'm not crazy, it's not open on the internet and it runs on our own infrastructure.

I put a joke on the front page. But who cares? We use a CLI tool anyway. We almost never reach the front page. It's funny to see newcomers wondering what is the meaning of the mysterious phrase on this awesome service. They don't even know that I'm the one "managing" the service (it runs by itself in reality).

But today, the unprofessional joke is gone. The service will soon be handed over another team because it's their job. RIP my little successful pastebin ⚰️

The Cubanization of Servers: How Tariffs Might Freeze the Hosting Industry in Time

In the streets of Havana, American cars from the 1950s still chug along, lovingly maintained for decades despite their age: Ford Fairlanes and Falcons, Pontiacs and Studebakers, Bel Airs and Stylelines, as well as FIATs and Alfa Romeos, Mercedes-Benz SLs and Volkswagen Karmann-Ghias, and Soviet-era Ladas and Volgas.

It’s not that Cubans have an island-wide classic car fetish. These “Yank tanks” are the product of ingenuity in the face of scarcity. Cuba, under decades of U.S. sanctions, couldn’t import new cars or parts, so it preserved what it had.

A similar phenomenon may be emerging in the world of web hosting, where rising tariffs and global supply chain disruptions are pushing providers toward holding onto aging server hardware far longer than usual. The “Cubanization” of servers may be a looming reality.

LowEndBox · The Cubanization of Servers: How Tariffs Might Freeze the Hosting Industry in TimeOn the island nation of Cuba, cars from the 1940s and 1950s dominate the landscape. This isn't due to passionate classic car enthusiasm. We might see similar adaptations to scarcity coming to a LowEnd hosting provider near you.

Looking for Canadian VPS or web hosting services?

I began exclusively using servers physically located in Canada since the Patriot Act in 2001. I've tried half a dozen different providers since then. Here are two I recommend:

4GoodHosting based in Vancouver [1]

CanSpace with servers outside of Montreal [2]

Aside from being a customer, I have no business or personal affiliation with either.

[2] canspace.ca/

4goodhosting.com4GoodHosting Even the best designed and built websites are nothing without quality web hosting, and for Canadian web hosting you’re in the best of hands with 4GoodHosting. you have the best in pricing AND reliability right here and that’s as it should be for business owners.

A #platform, is a platform, is a platform. The user don't care.

What is that, a #CSR on #serverless, an #SSR hooked up to a #VPS - or maybe you even manage your own #kubernetes. Daring, aren't we?

For some people, this is all static. But, they know what the #web is. They know that it's where the crawlers live.

When I look at this chart, I think #WebSocial has a ring to it that might project "Other" into the top 5 - maybe even top 3.

Why?
