The deadly 3,000kg car bloat trend

Australians are obsessed with SUVs and huge utes, but experts say they are making our roads deadlier

"Also in recent years, Australia has spectacularly failed at its mission of bringing down road deaths and serious injuries. Speed – and their proclivity to be driven faster – and overall height make larger vehicles far more likely to kill or cause serious injury when hitting pedestrians, cyclists, motorbikes and smaller cars."

"Newstead warns how this mentality can lead to an arms race to larger cars for those wanting to bolster their own safety. Crucially, if a driver can’t make eye contact with a pedestrians, “they are going to drive as though they aren’t there”"

Bloody #cyclists, never riding in the perfectly good bike lanes provided at great public expense

Try this one on Westall road with traffic doing 80km/hr just past your right elbow

PNW absolutely is a US term, mostly due the way the border is now enforced (past 50+ years) It is true in my #sailing community, too - #WA sailors rarely/never sail here, likewise #BC #sailors there, with the small exceptions of the San Juan Islands and Desolation Sound.

Some of those comments are why I do not think it should be on a #bike site. To stay "we're all #cyclists together" do not attract/platform the trolls, or highlight our differences/divisions.

My #motoring books from late 1950s/60s (often written by retired rally drivers who started out riding #bicycles) advise giving space to #cyclists as part of safe #driving and emphasise they are also road users, but also hint there was some tension developing between #drivers and cyclists, so its not anything new, but something that has been growing for over half a century.. #RoadSafety #UK

The Guardian · Who started the culture war between cyclists and drivers?By Zoe Williams

We've been thinking about radiation in the #ClimateChange course I teach. On my way to #UVic this morning I took this photo to use as a pop quiz today.

Why is there frost around but not below the tree?

It's 08:00, about the time of sunrise.

Also: #cyclists. The roads were OK, but frost was heavy in places and made for a few slippery patchs (stop lines, cross-walk paint).

Had to nudge 2 bikes away from the railing where I park at church. Nobody likes the #bikeRack! 😅 Since there are workers manning the basement parking, I guess #cyclists feel safe enough to not need to lock their #bikes to any rack. Just freestanding. Well I'm locking mine to the railing! 🤪

Went for lunch at Kenny Rogers again. My usual parking spot near the door is unavailable so I parked at the other end of the al fresco area. Safe enough. With a planter barrier + 1 meter above street level. 👍
