The deadly 3,000kg car bloat trend

Australians are obsessed with SUVs and huge utes, but experts say they are making our roads deadlier

"Also in recent years, Australia has spectacularly failed at its mission of bringing down road deaths and serious injuries. Speed – and their proclivity to be driven faster – and overall height make larger vehicles far more likely to kill or cause serious injury when hitting pedestrians, cyclists, motorbikes and smaller cars."

"Newstead warns how this mentality can lead to an arms race to larger cars for those wanting to bolster their own safety. Crucially, if a driver can’t make eye contact with a pedestrians, “they are going to drive as though they aren’t there”"

I'm a longtime fan of Martin Austermuhle's work, but this article of his in "The 51st" makes my blood boil:

Dangerous driving KILLS people. Even the people who are "fortunate" enough to survive being struck by a driver who was speeding or running a red light are often left with life-changing injuries. People who once were thriving are left unable to manage even basic self-care, much less a career.

We shouldn't be discussing reduced penalties for speeding. We should instead be discussing taking away both the license AND the car of anyone who drives dangerously.

This is personal for me. I won't go into detail because I try to keep my Mastodon account anonymous, but I will say that someone I'm close to was horrifically damaged by a driver who wasn't obeying traffic laws. Fines weren't enough to stop the driver from committing traffic violence.

No one's "right" or "need" to drive should supersede the right of other people to be safe on our streets.

The new #AI equipped #ANPR #camera #vans using tech developed in #Australia will be deployed by #WestMidlands #Police - they can apparently spot #speeding , seatbelt violations, #mobilephone use and even #DUI ! (probably by monitoring those who are driving erratically and not keeping to correct lanes)

Vans cost £47 000 each (cheaper than I had expected, a plain new van (without any Police equipment is £35k) #RoadSafety #Surveillance #UK

Zero road deaths - An unmet target

"Time-series projecting road traffic fatalities in Australia: Insights for targeted safety interventions
Projections for 2030, 2040, and 2050 show Australia won't achieve its zero-fatalities vision."

#Police in #Britain warn against #speeding following a rise in convictions and #collisions (although speed enforcement on the roads here is some of the strictest in #Europe, there's a stubborn core of #drivers determined to exceed the limits (max 70 mph / 112 km/h ) when they think they aren't being watched) #RoadSafety

BBC NewsDrivers caught speeding at 164mph told to stop being 'selfish'At least 24,000 drivers were detected speeding at over 100mph in five years, police data shows.

Folk on #UK #car / #motoring forums are going apeshit about plans by #Scotland plans to reduce #SpeedLimits for smaller #cars on single-carriageway #roads (but to increase them for #lorries / #HGV to the same limits as #England )

I suspect a lot of these #drivers have got used to treating rural roads as their personal racetrack, and are annoyed that #PoliceScotland may be taking more action against #speeding

#British #rapper #Stormzy has been banned from #driving for 9 months, after admitting to a string of #traffic violations (illegal tints, handheld mobile phone use). He already has a poor record for #Speeding in #London

Surely a modern Rolls Royce has #Bluetooth - it also makes 0 sense to drive a conspicious car that few others can afford but try to conceal yourself with excessively tinted windows (as well as being dangerous)

Koala deaths though road and highway crashes

“There were five koala deaths on this section of the Bruxner Highway in August alone and any protection measure we can take to reduce that toll is worth taking. A section of the highway between Lismore and Casino will have the speed reduced from 100km to 80km in a bid to reduce koala deaths...Members of the public regularly call us about koalas in roadside trees, which causes sleepless nights wondering if they will be the next ones hit that we have to pick up.”

There seems to be a lack of impact data on the 'dispersed' koalas of the 'upgraded' Gleniffer 'Highway' through the industrially logged forests of Bellingen/Gleniffer. The 50s mobility design has achieved its goal, more traffic is speeding now. Meanwhile, photos proliferate of 'koalas in roadside trees'.

Number of speeding tickets dropping at Ottawa's busiest photo radar camera
King Edward Avenue continues to be the hot spot for speeders on Ottawa roads this year, but the number of tickets issued by the new photo radar camera continues to decline as drivers adjust their speeds on the Lowertown road.

Question for drivers who have had trouble keeping to speed limits, especially those with adhd:

How do you teach yourself not to speed?

I got pulled over yesterday and got a ticket for speeding. It's my 4th in the almost 6 years I've been driving - although the other 3 have been for less than 10km over and was following the flow of traffic.

This one was for over 10km over.

I was passing someone who sped up as I was passing them, and I didn't notice I'd sped up so much to get past.

I've noticed that I'm more likely to speed when I haven't taken my ritalin, because I feel anxious being behind another car and not being able to see ahead of everything.

I also feel like I drive better if I don't take my ritalin, because my reflexes are faster and I'm taking in ALL the things around me instead of having a more narrow focus.. so I prefer not to take it if I'm going to do a long drive (yesterday was Bathurst to Sydney and back.. so like 8 hours).

I don't really have a sense of how fast I'm going, and I do check my speedometer but everytime I do that it's taking my eyes off the road so I can't be constantly looking at it.

_____

I don't want a lecture about the dangers of speeding. I KNOW.. it's literally why I'm asking, Chad. I was a nurse for a long time - I have literally seen what speeding does to people, probably more so than most.

Drive out, difficult to see in this weather; rain, wet roads, and bright headlights coming in the other direction.

The rain stops as I put the equipment together, run my tests, activate the system. Back into the car, paperwork. By the time I've finished writing I have five hits.

We're in a thirty street, next to a children's home, with an unprotected bus stop. It's going to be a busy day.
