History cut short! We have reached the end of navigable canal at a flight of disused locks.

The oak lock gates are gone. The top of each lock is filled with concrete, to let water flow down the flight without eroding the banks.

Paddlers could portage their canoes or kayaks uphill, and then paddle on. But narrowboats can go no further.

Photo of a disused lock, taken from where the top gate was, looking down through the deep, empty, stone lock chamber into the pound below. There is a steel ladder on each side of the chamber, painted black, and a black-and-white railing along the length of the lock to keep pedestrians on the towpath away from the edge of the lock. (Black and white are the traditional paint colours of British Waterways infrastructure.) The surrounding countryside is green with grass, wild plants, and trees. In the foreground an unpainted wood footbridge crosses the lock, and there's a remnant of the above-ground steel frame of a ground paddle at the closer end of the footbridge.
