Today is one of the hardest days of my entire life! I'm completely heartbroken and shattered that my wife and I had to put this precious kitty, Bess, to sleep this morning!

Bess came into my life when she was only 8 weeks old, and she would have turned 17 years old this coming September.

Bess has been a huge part of my life, has given me numerous upon numerous memories during those nearly 17 years.

Bess was hands down the sweetest, most loving, most caring, yet totally different cat than any other I've ever owned.

Bess had her own little personality like no other cat I've ever had, and I've had a LOT of cats over the years.

When she was very young and up until about 2 - 2 1/2 years ago, she was a very large kitty, weight wise. She once weighed in at almost 23 pounds. Over the last 2 - 3 years she lost a lot of weight, and in fact, she was down to 7.6 pounds this morning when we took her to the vet due to the swelling in her leg and in her throat.

I'm going to miss Bess more than anything. I'm going to miss seeing her sleeping most anywhere and everywhere. I'm going to miss her getting in a box the moment we sit it on the floor. I'm going to miss her begging for food in the kitchen, or as she likely thought she was doing, helping us cook while in the kitchen.

I'm going to miss her little "meeps", as she didn't have much of a voice due to the person who owned her when she was born, her boyfriend stepped on her throat trying to kill her and crushed her vocal chords. But she did have a little meow and a little "meep" as Bianca and I called it, and when she meeped, she got whatever it was she wanted at the time.

I'm going to miss giving her "bathtub time", as she loved to get in the bathtub, have us turn the water on for a second so she could then drink the water from the bathtub.

I'm going to miss her, totally and completely! I just hope she felt like she was given a great life and I hope she has no complaints.

She's now off to join her brother Porgie, who passed away in June 2022, and of course Pops who passed away in July of 2021. She was certainly a huge part of Pops' life as well for her first 12 - 13 years of her life. Pops loved her so much and would be heartbroken to know she's no longer with us.

Bess was having swelling in her left leg the last couple of weeks, was breathing heavier than normal over the last few months and had been diagnosed with stage 2 kidney disease back in November 2023. She wasn't in the greatest of health, but she lived a full life!

I love you Bess, Bessie Lou, Ms. Lou, Ms. Lou Poo, Bessie Lou Poo, and the likely hundreds of other names we called you throughout the years. I'm going to miss you more than you can ever imagine!

We're having to take Bess, who is almost 17 years old, to the vet today. She's been getting some swelling in her left paw and arm and we're not sure why that is happening.

When we took her to the vet last year, we were told she has early stages of kidney disease, and we're wondering if it is related to that.

We're hoping it's something simple and something they can easily treat. We're also scared it could be much worse and that we might get some really bad news.

If you can, send some good vibes our way!
