"At the end of the 18th century, #Spain's official #geographer, #TomásLopez, was asked by the King to create an accurate #map of the kingdom. In an attempt to delegate the herculean labour required, Tomás drew a series of circles, picked the town in the center of each circle, and asked the local priest to answer a questionnaire and draw up a map of their province. The goal was to amalgamate the responses into a single map. But none of these priests were trained in #cartography, and many of them would have had limited access to maps at all. Nonetheless, 500 of them tried. In one map, the entire region is represented simply by a series of letters (“A” for church, “B” for hermitage, “C” for house, “D” for tree, and so on). Another represents the surrounding villages as if they are orbiting planets. In some, the handwriting forms the topographies. In others, descriptive columns of text take center stage, as if the language itself is a landmark. Each priest implicitly reveals how they see the world around them, and the relative importance of its constituent parts: nature or people, religion or trade, architecture or landscape, precision or vibes."

Happy birthday to Gerardus Mercator (1512-1594) renown Flemish cartographer.

What made Mercator a great #cartographer, was in fact his abilities as a #mathematician -and like those of us scientists who feel compelled also to create art he was wasn't hindered by his immense ability as an engraver. He produced beautiful world maps (a version of which is depicted in this print), globes, 🧵1/n

A wild map made in #QGIS appeared from an envelope today. I'm happy to see #FOSS used in research in the private sector as well.

As a #geographer I have to judge the map. It is the law.

The map is surprisingly good for a BW map. I like the slight off-white colour of the water bodies. The textual elements are clearly legible. BUT. The scale bar and north arrow are way too large, and numbers would've sufficed to indicate the various areas. Now some texts make it hard to identify locations.

Welcome new folks! Reminder that I’m a professor of political & creative geography at Université de Genève
(she/her), 🇨🇭. Currently writing / drawing a book-length comic on borders. Still hoping academic folk & others engage more here, so tooting about work, but also sewing & yodelling (!).
