Rebecca Banner<p>Did some sewing machine maintenance today. Treadle machine has been out of action for a while because tension issues with the shuttle. Was reminded of it after visiting Wimpole Hall this week (sewing machine in servant's quarters needs new belt). A bit of investigation online and I took the shuttle apart and gave it a good clean. Seems to be working better now. If I need any parts or repairs in the future I've at least found out what type it is. <a href="https://mastodonapp.uk/tags/sewing" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>sewing</span></a> <a href="https://mastodonapp.uk/tags/historybounding" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>historybounding</span></a> <a href="https://mastodonapp.uk/tags/vintageSewingMachines" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>vintageSewingMachines</span></a></p>
Gulleko<p>Update on the Singer 66K I bought today! </p><p>Bad news first: <br>It currently doesn't work.<br>My bobbins are slightly too big.</p><p>Good news: <br>It only seems to need a new driving belt, all the parts appear to be moving as they should.<br>So I CAN FIX IT (probably)</p><p>Anyway here's some engine noise.</p><p><a href="https://kind.social/tags/VintageSewingMachines" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>VintageSewingMachines</span></a> <a href="https://kind.social/tags/SewingMachine" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>SewingMachine</span></a></p>
Earthy in EV heaven<p>Repeat after me : 'I have enough vintage sewing machines'. </p><p><a href="https://aus.social/tags/vintageSewingMachines" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>vintageSewingMachines</span></a></p>
Tom<p>This 29-4 was manufactured between May 13 and August 10, 1921 in a production run of 1000 machines and is about half way in the serial numbers.</p><p>102 years old.</p><p><a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/vintageSewingMachines" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>vintageSewingMachines</span></a></p>
Tom<p>The old part caused about 1/4 inch slop, or backlash, as it went up and down. This reduced the stitch length some and caused a lot of missed stitches and I had to have the needle turned slightly to make it pickup the thread somewhat.</p><p>No more slop now.</p><p><a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/vintagesewing" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>vintagesewing</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/vintageSewingMachines" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>vintageSewingMachines</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/singerpatcher" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>singerpatcher</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/diy" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>diy</span></a></p>
Tom<p>I made a thing.</p><p>It's a needle bar piston joint for a Singer 29-4 patcher sewing machine. The old one was worn and abused, not sure if an owner along the way ground the tip down or the factory did because the bottom of the hole wasn't as big or the hole had a bushing put in the bottom.</p><p>I drilled out the hole in the drive arm, turned a new piece on the lathe to match the hole, then shaped the rest of it mostly by hand and drill press.</p><p><a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/vintageSewingMachines" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>vintageSewingMachines</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/vintagesewing" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>vintagesewing</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/singerpatcher" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>singerpatcher</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/diy" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>diy</span></a></p>
JulietJFall<p>A fabulous afternoon with my yodeling friends yesterday, sewing pantaloons to go under our dresses. Some singing, some cake, and several almost-completed garments. <br><a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/sewing" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>sewing</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/historicalSewing" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>historicalSewing</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/folklore" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>folklore</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/tracht" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>tracht</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/costumesSuisses" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>costumesSuisses</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/vintageSewingMachines" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>vintageSewingMachines</span></a></p>
JulietJFall<p>Recovering from a virus with one of my favourite hobbies: trying to get old frozen-up sewing machines to work. This came from a German flea market. I was doing fine until I fried the very old capacitor… Now trying to find a new motor because this one has stumped me and I’m not convinced that my hack that works on 1940s Singers is actually safe on this fabulous orange beast.<br><a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/vintageSewingMachines" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>vintageSewingMachines</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/sewing" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>sewing</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/recycling" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>recycling</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/repair" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>repair</span></a></p>
JulietJFall<p><span class="h-card" translate="no"><a href="https://mastodon.social/@lunavives" class="u-url mention" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">@<span>lunavives</span></a></span> Oh fabulous! Do you have the manual? It looks absolutely indestructible. The key to getting these old ladies working again is lots of new sewing-machine oil in all the right places; kerosene to clean up gummed-up bits — smells horrid but works a treat; new needle; new thread; making sure it’s threaded correctly to wind a bobbin; &amp; carefully threading it. After that it’s mostly just tweaking the tension. As it’s a treadle, you might need to change the belt. <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/vintageSewingMachines" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>vintageSewingMachines</span></a></p>
JulietJFall<p>Welcome new folks! Reminder that I’m a professor of political &amp; creative geography at Université de Genève
(she/her), 🇨🇭. Currently writing / drawing a book-length comic on borders. Still hoping academic folk &amp; others engage more here, so tooting about work, but also sewing &amp; yodelling (!).

alwen<p>Did I ever show you the <a href="https://mstdn.party/tags/Turissa" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Turissa</span></a>, sewing-machine fedizens? Turissa designed it: Gritzner-Kayser made it: White sold it in the US as the 655.</p><p><a href="https://mstdn.party/tags/VintageSewingMachines" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>VintageSewingMachines</span></a></p>
JulietJFall<p><span class="h-card"><a href="https://mastodon.online/@ms_rey" class="u-url mention" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">@<span>ms_rey</span></a></span> Exciting! How about a vintage machine? I had a modern Pfaff with lots of space that I loved, but I ran it into the ground doing too much free motion quilting. Eventually the plastic bits wore out after about 6 yrs, despite expensive repairs. So now I just use indestructible vintage all-metal machines &amp; enjoy the tinkering around with them as much as the sewing, at a fraction of the price. <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/vintageSewingMachines" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>vintageSewingMachines</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/quilting" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>quilting</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/sewing" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>sewing</span></a></p>
alwen<p>I guess I never shared the Superb Owl I picked up a couple of weeks ago - 1896 Singer 15-22 (long-beak shuttle) with owl decals! <br><a href="https://mstdn.party/tags/VintageSewingMachines" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>VintageSewingMachines</span></a> <br><a href="https://mstdn.party/tags/VintageSewingMachine" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>VintageSewingMachine</span></a></p>
alwen<p>I put one of the two needles from the drawer in and tried to get it to stitch. I failed, but one of my vintage sewing colleagues pointed out that transverse-shuttle machines (shuttle moves &lt;--&gt; left and right) need the long groove to the FRONT. Oh yeah! Can't wait to go back and try again.</p><p><a href="https://mstdn.party/tags/WhitehillSewingMachine" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>WhitehillSewingMachine</span></a> <br><a href="https://mstdn.party/tags/vintageSewingMachines" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>vintageSewingMachines</span></a></p>
alwen<p>The needle clamp is pretty interesting. The needle goes through the piece to the left, which is then inserted in the needlebar and tightened by the wing-headed nut in the foreground. It has a needle stop, so unlike my Singer 13/Medium, there is no messing about setting the needle height with a pin through the eye.</p><p><a href="https://mstdn.party/tags/WhitehillSewingMachine" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>WhitehillSewingMachine</span></a> <br><a href="https://mstdn.party/tags/vintageSewingMachines" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>vintageSewingMachines</span></a></p>
alwen<p>I took photos of the Whitehill's attachment set (by Johnston Ruffler Co) yesterday and worked out how the needle clamp worked. </p><p><a href="https://mstdn.party/tags/vintageSewingMachines" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>vintageSewingMachines</span></a> <br><a href="https://mstdn.party/tags/WhitehillSewingMachine" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>WhitehillSewingMachine</span></a></p>
