#CommunityFridge

Hi there! Lately I have been working to print and distribute radical zines (and PPE) to my neighborhood's little free libraries and community fridges. As a disabled comrade, I sometimes find myself feeling like I can't do enough - but things like this is my way of getting my boots on the ground!

It is my current goal to purchase a laser printer so I can print many more zines and also take on print jobs for folks who want a trusted place to print their own flyers/zines, etc.

To that end I have set up a Liberapay at https://liberapay.com/drscully/ to fund this goal. I am looking to raise $500 USD to purchase the Brother MFCL3780CDW. Any surplus (for example if I manage to snag a refurbished unit) will go towards keeping things going with paper and toner and PPE for the community.

Any amount/sharing this post is appreciated. Thank you for reading - I'm grateful for your time!

Tee hee.. just cooked up dinner with a couple of things from the freezer. Hadn't realised husband was watching #MasterchefTheProfessionals so when I gave him his food I put my deepest husky voice on and said... ' Jo has prepared a slow roasted pepper and tomato basque served with tortellini quatre formaggio' Basque was made when we had a huge amount of red peppers and tomatoes left at our #CommunityFridge so just roasted it all and added a bit of onion and whizzed it down.

I wanted to capture the essence of community support and kindness through this artwork. The vibrant colors and the inviting imagery aim to create a sense of comfort and hope. I hope to encourage others to think about the role we all play in helping those who are hungry.

I can assure you many people are really struggling with high cost of #Food - there was lots of extra #CostOfLiving funding over the winter which has now all disappeared. So if you are able to #donate see who is doing #FoodBank #CommunityFridge type projects in your area. We are hugely grateful for the #LotteryCommunityFund for supporting our #CommunityFridge but still need to buy extra food supplies as the amount of our #SurplusFood donations from supermarkets vary. If you are able to make a #donation to us or any similar projects it will be very gratefully received. #MutualAidRequest #MutualAid #FoodPoverty #Thankyou localgiving.org/fundraising/Se

So at the food distribution point where I participate, I don't let any food go back to the food bank (where it runs the risk of being thrown out). I want it distributed.

So we never send any leftover food back. Instead we put it into the community fridge and pantry. Local neighbors pick it up and put it to good use quickly.

But that got me thinking. The food bank works with other orgs and has other distribution points. I spoke with the guy who drives the food bank truck out and said I could hit up each of those places at the end of their runs and take any food left over and put it in the fridge.

He thought it was a great idea!

He showed me his and other drivers schedules. (Its announced on the food bank app so its easy!). I'll get a feel for the schedules after a bit. This would be a good thing to organize other volunteers around as well.

So now I have an excuse to go visit the other groups handing out food and start building connections to the community fridge/pantry!!!

I think its about time to spin up my own group. Focus on logistics and moving food around. Set up the food rescue program too. Gonna start in earnest around mid to late July.

I'll keep y'all updated.

Been a particularly chaotic couple of weeks at work so just spent the afternoon doing some therapeutic #gardening on the #CommunityAllotment Potted up lots of wildflowers that had self seeded mostly #foxglove #teasel #lungwort #yarrow and also potted up some #jostaberry cuttings that had rooted well. Most will be given away through our #CommunityFridge but some of the flowers are going to our local museum #TheFolly who are creating a medicinal garden 🌱😀❤️

A bit of a blatant plug for our #CommunityFridge if anyone would like to support us.. poster girl Ethel is 88 and regularly brings us surplus veg from her son in laws garden! If you are able to donate we can get gift aid this way but watch out as they sneakily try and add a 'optional' % for fees. 😃 Thanks localgiving.org/charity/settle

Strangely.. being offered 72 lettuces 🥬 was not the largest or strangest #CommunityFridge donation we have received. The week before Christmas we collected 93 cauliflowers from #Booths - some were badly frost damaged and went to feed lots of chickens..the rest were swiftly delivered to various local charities and businesses and used to make large amounts of soup and cauliflower cheese for our #PublicLivingRoom and #CommunityFridge

In our little corner of #NorthYorkshire we run a #CommunityFridge and collect surplus veg and other stuff from local supermarkets to use or pass on. We have an #organic allotment run mostly #biodynamic with a lot of #CompanionPlanting. We share lots of heritage and saved seeds and pass on fruit cuttings, perennial seeds and surplus veg and flower plants to share around the community. Just pondering how we can scale up to do a bit more. Huge thanks to #Hubbub #Coop #Booths for their support but we could do so much more if we weren't always firefighting and dealing with people in crisis as the systems collapse around us...sigh..

Two years ago, Transition group Zero Carbon Guildford moved into a former New Look high street store and transformed it into a buzzing community climate hub.

Volunteers set up a library of things, community fridge, zero waste shop, baby clothes library, business network and a vertical farm growing salad crops.

They ran cinema, quiz and open mic nights, a food waste feast along the high street, and a climate conversation group.

They trained energy advisors and citizen scientists to test the local river’s water quality, and hosted dozens of groups from other communities who wanted to create a hub just like theirs.

In two years, they reckon their projects have saved a whooping 583 tonnes of CO2 emissions from their community.

It shows how people who are concerned can come together, and have a real, tangible impact and engage whole new audiences with some volunteer power and a meantime space. It’s why they won innovative UK climate project in the Climate Coalition’s annual awards this year.

Now their lease is up, and they want to take Zero Carbon Guildford to a new home and the next level. They’ve set up a crowdfunder, hoping to find out what they could achieve with great capacity and a more permanent space.
