Strange observations and strange worlds
Figured out what Eastward reminds me of! Not so much Legend of Zelda or Final Fantasy, (though it DOES have a faux Dragon Quest game inside the game,) but it reminds me of Secret of Evermore. The 16 bit isometric style, the charging mechanic, even the harsh transition from chapter 1 and 2. It's good.
Probably going to end up buying it as it's only $10ish atm.

@greyor I recently set up #bsnes and #SecretOfEvermore and even played with #MSU1 for it, on this laptop. :)
If I bring my #SNES controller to the in-laws, maybe I actually get to play some of that again soon.

The story follows the adventures of a boy and his dog as they attempt to understand and escape a strange world into which they have been unwittingly drawn. The game is uniquely the only game developed by Square's North American division, and was never released in Japan.
@greyor is it #SecretOfMana's gameplay, or the storyline/setting that is bothering you?
Gameplay-wise #SecretOfEvermore is very similar (even though they were made by two different teams, and the Evermore team had to recreate their own engine for legal reasons, IIRC). Evermore's alchemy system is quite unique though, and really adds something to the game, and its story is more like #SciFi rather than #Fantasy.
Evermore needs to be patched for #CoOp unfortunately.
