#statstab #326 Visualization in academic writing, by {Experimentology}
Thoughts: Good data visualization is just as important in clear academic writing as the text itself.

We set out to change that, through legal reporting that gives you options on your rights in the #Trump era.
Here’s our promise to you: action-oriented #reporting.
That means informing you about your powers, whether it’s protests, petitions, town halls, or the courts.

"There are several overlapping groups of people who, probably for different reasons, are more likely to prefer news that shares their point of view:
(a) the ideological and politically engaged;
(b) young people, especially those who rely mainly on social media for news;
(c) women; and
(d) less socioeconomically advantaged groups."
"In markets dominated by fewer brands — often publicly funded ones such as the BBC — respondents in that market also tend to express higher levels of preference for impartiality." In Britain, where respondents use an average of four news brands, the lowest number across the 40 countries studied, 62% of respondents say they prefer news displaying no point of view.

I’ve been working on a pretty gnarly data a warehouse reporting problem for the past few days. It’s up, leveling my ability to do this kind of work. The tooling has always been so limited and I am beginning to understand it is me who is limited in the understanding of the tooling ecosystem.
There may or may not be a wonderful overlap of programming and data warehousing but it’s clear that me not being aware of it doesn’t mean it doesn’t exist.

Russia loses big on Pokrovsk. Again.
Putin’s bluff on gambling everything on the election of comrade Trump is starting to show:
Russia’s momentum is faltering. They can’t replace their equipment, and are resorting to fighting on horseback.

"Political data site FiveThirtyEight being shuttered amid sweeping ABC News layoffs"
I'd love to know exactly when this was decided and when this was announced.
The polling data disappeared off the main site just hours after Trump's lines crossed into net disapproval. The main site was still there, but the polling was gone leaving the left column a bit empty.
A few hours after that the main page went away.

1. If you're going to #report somebody you need to give #examples of what #activity you're reporting. Just #reporting a #profile and telling an #instance #admin that an #account is being "#spammy" doesn't cut it. Not when we can clearly see the user is not.
2. Again, not a very helpful report. You report a user and say they're a #SCAM account but offer up absolutely no #evidence to support your #claim.
3. Every account was new once, including the person that reported this one. As long as #NSFW #content is properly #flagged, there's no issue. Suspecting an account to be a "scam account or worse" is not a valid #reason for reporting an account.
4. Another report without any basis or #justification.
5. Again, another baseless report about somebody with absolutely ZERO evidence to back up their claim.
So here's what's going to happen....
The instances that forwarded these #bogus #reports to me, and wasted my time, each have a strike against them.
Strike three and we tell #Sharkey to #ignore any and all reports coming from the #instance in the future.
No #admin wants #BadActors on their instances, and no admin wants a #BadActor to make someone else feel unwelcome.
But you can't just flag and report an account for any bullshit reason either.
You have to give us proof and evidence.
This is not high school and this is not middle school. If somebody is being disruptive or causing problems, let us know.
But if you just suspect someone might cause problems or they might be disruptive... wait until you have proof and evidence and then let us know!

Is there a #website / #service that tracks the origin of a #news story?
For example the relentlessly continued #reporting that the press conference between Zelensky and Trumpet resulted in a shouting match.
It'd be nice to have a visual when reading a "news" story of just how much has been copied from the original source and how much is independently written.
AP Describes #Musk’s #Coup as ‘Penchant for Dabbling’
"AP (2/4/25) evidently needed e work of 10 reporters to produce “Elon Musk Tightens Grip on #Federal #Government as #Democrats Raise Alarms”.. “in charge of retooling the federal government.” Is tt a thing? #AP suggests we believe tt it is.. If u rely on #reporting fr #nominallyneutral outlets like #AssociatedPress, u might imagine tt’s only a concern of partisan Democrats, not regular folks like you & me" #journalism

You will be #notified when someone quotes you.
You will be able to #withdraw your post from the quoted context at any time.
We also want to build a tight integration for Quote Posts with the #reporting functionality, to help people to feel more safe. »

England Ireland Rugby
An entertaining match - but you really have to wonder what some of the sports writers are smoking these days…
“73 mins. England are hammering into everything like they are apoplectic about Eurostar prices and blaming the SNCF. Every tackle is driving blue players back and every ruck is personal battle. We’re in for one hell of a final fifteen minutes.”
Media response to 2022 IPCC report suggests shift to ‘solutions-based reporting’
Journalists covering a major climate report in 2022 broke with a “historical tradition” of focusing on the negative impacts of climate change, shifting instead to “positive, solutions-based reporting”, a study has found.
The research, published in Climatic Change, looks at the way US and UK news outlets covered the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change’s (#IPCC) 2022 report on the mitigation of #ClimateChange.
The findings “strongly suggest a shift in emphasis” to #climate solutions in climate-change #reporting, the authors say.
They note that previous IPCC reports “did not receive such an overwhelmingly positive, and at times even optimistic, message”.
However, the response to the report was significantly less optimistic on social media, where popular posts were more likely to focus on a “sense of hopelessness” and the “dire” nature of the climate threat, the authors say.
I know, it's a long read and reading is boring, but I really think this is important, especially considering what is going on right now.
