Last week, Christopher Baxter, the editor of @SpotlightPA, a nonprofit local newsroom in Pennsylvania, made a post on LinkedIn that started: “I recently had lunch with a staunch, pro-Trump Republican and highly successful business leader, and his views on local news changed my own.” In the post, Baxter went on to explain that nonprofit newsrooms' focus on pro-democracy language might not be serving them well. Both of these academic studies focus on the movement of people from Twitter to systems like Mastodon. One focuses on journalists, the other focuses on the different moral values of both networks.

“Is legacy media dead?” asks @parkermolloy for @damemagazine. She looks at how, with newspaper owners interfering in the work of their reporters, independent media sources are the ones holding power to account. “What independent journalism offers that legacy media increasingly doesn’t is transparency about where it’s coming from. There’s no pretense of objectivity that masks institutional biases and billionaire influence,” she writes. “Readers know what they’re getting, which paradoxically can build more trust than false neutrality.”
