Absolutely. If education is about training brains to get stronger (and I think it is) then it makes no sense to use AI to do any of the exercises we know brains NEED to actually do. Education is not just about completing processes, anymore than you can get a friend to go to the gym for you.

By all means let’s use AI to remove boring admin work and free up more time for learning and collaboration. #openedtech #AI mastodon.social/@DrPen/1137969

MastodonDr Pen (@DrPen@mastodon.social)Attached: 1 image So many voices now really getting very uneasy about this. We cannot all be wrong. Young, old, creative, academic, political... why are all the universities kissing the (usually Bigtech) AI ring so fervently? If it's the future, is it the right one? #KissTheRing #ai #GenAI #academia #academicchatter

"Linux distros are ideal operating systems for #education environments for multiple reasons. A big one is that they're 100% free to download."

"I would go so far as to say it's even better suited than either #MacOS or #Windows because of cost, reliability, security, and flexibility. There's just so much you can do with #Linux that you can't do with the competition."

Who else is thinking about a strong #AI for the #Mastodon #Fediverse?

Something that is #learning primarily from all our opinions and discussions and shared data/observations from people and sensors, sorting through it using widely-acceptable and open transparent logical algorithms and helping us get towards some sense of #Truth, as well as actual solutions to ALL those scary #SDGs by 2030

All the data hosted in a safe and especially #sustainable way as we can possibly devise (that AI will get to improving itself eventually)

Something we can also trust as our own #OpenEdtech

Then we might be ready to face a much longer future together as a species

If that doesn't motivate you enough, ... looking at the science it seems likely a huge number of us on this #planet might have the choice to live for hundreds of years, it all concerns your own sustainability too ;-)

Something for colleges and universities to thing about...

Switzerland has taken a major step forward with its "Federal Law on the Use of Electronic Means for the Fulfillment of Government Tasks." This groundbreaking legislation mandates using OpenSource software (OSS) in the public sector.

How about a "Federal Law on the Use of Electronic Means for the Fulfillment of *Educational* Tasks?"

I hope we've been learning from the record of #bigtech in recent years, and the many downsides that centralised profit-first platforms have brought. Cultural imperialism., data security, content control, etc

You don't need ChatGPT Edu deciding what you can and can't do, and you don't need Microsoft Copilot recording your screens.

Freely available language models are plentiful and powerful. Try OpenWebUI and Ollama, for example, on your own servers or even on your own personal computer.
