Today in Labor History March 20, 1985: The Bolivian authorities sent in the army to crush a General Strike. Workers had launched the strike in response to austerity measures by the Siles Zuazo administration. They demanded higher wages, stable food supplies, price controls and the president’s resignation. At the time, inflation was 3,400%. 10,000 miners filled the streets of La Paz each day. The General Strike lasted 16 days and spread to Santa Cruz and Chuquisaca. On March 24, the miners accepted a government offer to quadruple the minimum wage. They eventually forced Zuazo to resign.

The #legal battle has national repercussions as the number of #ICE detainees…rises to its highest level in 5 yrs. The vast majority are held in #private facilities run by #GEOGroup or corporate competitors like #CoreCivic. If following state #MinimumWage becomes the norm, #Trump’s #immigration crackdown could cost the country even more than it otherwise would—unless private detention centers absorb the cost themselves or…cut back on cleaning, which…detainees…already accused GEO of doing.

At the 1,575-bed detention center GEO runs for #ICE in Tacoma, Washington, detainees once prepared meals, washed laundry & scrubbed toilets, doing jobs that would otherwise require 85 full-time employees…. The state’s #MinimumWage at the time was $11 an hour. (It’s now $16.66.) In 2017, Washington sued GEO to enforce it, & in Oct 2021 a federal jury ruled unanimously in the state’s favor.

@greycat @godpod EXACTLY!

And they should only be paid for the time they are actually working, not a second more!

Also every kind of income should be taxed like #WageWork and #BuyBorrowDie needs to be criminalized as illegal #TaxDodging and #SocialSecurityFraud!

🚨 Missouri House passes bill repealing voter-approved mandated paid sick leave 🚨

Proposition A passed in November with 57% of the vote. The statute raises the minimum wage to an eventual $15 an hour in 2026. It also mandates paid sick leave for employees with some exceptions.

The legislation passed on Thursday entirely repeals the mandated sick leave portion. It also removes any minimum wage increase slated to go in effect in January 2027 and beyond.

Continuing my Sunday-morning newspaper reading...

Excellent op-ed in the NY Times today on how the US economy and policies and pushing working people into homelessness.

"Today there isn’t a single state, city or county in the United States where a full-time minimum-wage worker can afford a median-priced two-bedroom apartment."

"Because when work no longer provides stability, when wages are too low and rents are too high, when millions of people are one medical bill, one missed paycheck, one rent hike away from losing their homes — who, exactly, is safe?"

The New York Times · Opinion | America Is Pushing Its Workers Into HomelessnessBy Brian Goldstone

Today in Labor History February 26, 1941: 14,000 workers struck at Bethlehem Steel’s Lackawanna mill in Buffalo, New York. As a defense contractor, the company had $1.5 billion worth of armament orders, but refused to pay the minimum wage mandated for government contracts. Furthermore, they had recently fired 1,000 workers, blaming their last work stoppage for damaging some coke ovens. The pickets effectively stopped scabs from getting in. After less than 2 days, the company agreed to rehire the fired men and began talks on a raise and union recognition. However, a month later, they reneged.

You guys, the house bill to increase minimum wage didn’t die. It’s actually still moving. I don’t even work and I think I’m going to cry right now this is amazing.

Minimum wage in New Hampshire is still $7.25 an hour. We don’t even have apartments that are $825 a month anymore, but when I moved into this place that was the rent and if I had to earn 3 1/2 times the rent I would’ve had to make more than $34,000 a year to qualify to apply.

This is why there are so many homeless people. Once you lose your home it’s almost impossible to get into a new one especially for elderly or disabled people, and single parents. They need two bedrooms which means they need more income.

Republicans seek to roll back voter-approved minimum wage increases

Missouri House Republicans are looking to alter the new minimum wage and sick leave law voters approved in November.

Proposition A, which passed in rural, suburban and urban parts of the state, raised the minimum wage from $12.30 an hour to $13.75 an hour this year. It will go up again to $15 an hour in 2026, with inflationary increases allowed after that.

Employers with gross annual receipts of at least $500,000 will also be required to provide earned sick leave to employees.

@dramypsyd
Thanks for posting the link!

I got a page asking me to confirm I was human. Then it went to a generic page (I might have done something wrong?) and I had to search for the item before I could submit a comment.

So for those who need it here's the title of proposed rule:

"Employment of Workers With Disabilities Under Section 14(c) of the Fair Labor Standards Act"

A search for "workers with disabilities" should find it
