A quick illustrative #map on the implications of using different types of centroids in regional #demography #mobility and #migration studies.

Think about what you are emphasizing.

By using population-weighted centroids, you can emphasize the population perspective in the analysis instead of the geometry, potentially improving your analysis considerably. The distance difference is stronger in sparsely populated and remote regions.

📣 New paper 🚨
In "Frontiers of self-realisation. How (un)certainty and imaginaries shape fertility intentions in Italy and Norway", against the backdrop of low-fertility, Giacomo Bazzani, Lars Dommermuth, Trude Lappegard and Daniele Vignoli study fertility intentions and uncover a new type of children imaginary as ‘choice, pleasure, and social anchor’.

"The turning point was 2020, the year of the COVID-19 pandemic, when Alabama had 57,643 births, but 64,779 deaths. The following year saw the trend continue, when the state saw almost 11,000 more people die than were born. The trend has continued every year since."

Russia is a tyranny, ruled by right-wing fascists. And it has a demographic problem, just as a lot of other capitalistic countries. If you have read Marxist or anarchist works about the issue – you would probably know, that under capitalism family is an institute for capital inheritance. Since 95 % of people don’t have capital – it is logical from capitalist system for them not to have any families or kids. But capital relies on millions of poor folk to exploit and this 2 facts creates a contradiction. Such contradictions are natural for capitalist system and there are a lot of them. The longer capitalism exist the worse all those contradiction will become.
As all other right-wing fascists, Putin decided to fight demographic problem by creating different restrictions on abortions (sounds familiar?), fighting “childfree propaganda”, “LGBTQ”, etc culture war nonsense. Some not too bright individuals even tried to adopt medieval Muslim tradition with several wives to appease him. From all the posters, mass media, web everywhere AI-generated faces of families with 8 kids are watching with their deadly eyes over poor residents of Russian cities with dumb slogans like “We need to grow more”. Women has to fill blanks on why they don’t have kids, and when was their last period in order to keep their jobs. Students are also under constant pro-fertility propaganda pressure. And those are just a tip of an iceberg.
But, when a rich Moscow resident was asked a question – “Why so many sick kids are living only on internet or TV donations for medical care in Russia?” The answer– well, no one asked poor people to give birth to kids, that they could not support financially.
Poetry of madness isn’t it? No one asked poor people to give birth to kids, but literally entire state apparatus is pressuring population, especially poor to give birth to kids.
They need more slaves and soldiers and they don’t want to take slightest responsibility for them. They don’t even want to move their attention towards the real issue. Instead – LGBTQ, Transgender, woke and all other scapegoats to blame without the end.
