ALL of the #cops were acquitted of the most serious charge—violating Nichols’s #CivilRights by causing his death. One cop, Demetrius Haley, was convicted on a lesser charge of violating Nichols’s civil rights by causing #BodilyInjury.
"The maximum sentence for the other three is life in federal prison. There is no parole in the federal system, so each defendant will serve the entirety of their sentence."

All 5 officers were also charged at the state level w/counts including 2ndDegree #murder, official #suppression, aggravated #kidnapping, official #misconduct & aggravated #assault. Mills also pleaded #guilty to state charges.State trials for the 4 other officers haven’t yet been scheduled. #TyreNichols, 29, was a FedEx employee w/a young son. He loved photography, skateboarding & watching the sunset. His parents said he had never been in trouble w/ #police before the traffic stop on Jan 7, 2023.

They are charged w/ use of #ExcessiveForce, conspiracy to commit #WitnessTampering , #obstruction of #justice & deliberate #indifference to #TyreNichols’s #medical condition.

A former Memphis police officer changed his plea to guilty Thursday in the fatal beating of #TyreNichols, becoming the first of five officers charged to reverse course.
Desmond Mills Jr. entered his plea during a hearing at the Memphis federal courthouse as part of a larger agreement to settle charges in state court as well. It wasn’t immediately clear how the four other officers planned to respond and specifically whether they would follow suit.
