The second session of our 3-year Study Circle on Degrowth & Exnovation is now open to all for registration! Join us in Finland to explore and discuss how to build resilient communities in the midst of collapse, while dismantling the fossil capitalist economy.
https://www.nsuweb.org/circle-9-degrowth-and-exnovation/
How are people organizing locally along degrowth principles of sufficiency and conviviality? What challenges do we face, and what tactics can we pursue in establishing ways of living that allow dismantling of harmful organizations, infrastructure, technologies and ideas, that contribute to extractivism and fossil capitalism?
Suggested themes of discussion include initiatives for convivial community-based leisure (let's turn airports into natural recreation areas!), paths towards nowtopias, municipal organizing, neo-ruralism, defense of the commons, convivial conservation, unlearning high-tech and promoting low-tech, among many others.
The session will be part of the Nordic Summer University's summer session, including 8 concurrent study circles on other super-cool topics, which you can also attend: https://www.nsuweb.org/activities/summer-session/

Revisiting ‘future fit’.
What do others think? See the linked thread for context.
I like that it’s both aspirational and encodes a warning. I like that it’s contingent upon the conditions constantly emerging.
Let me know your thoughts

@Lylamehta i like this very much, #Sufficiency! Very elegant, very good to think with (and more appealing than #Degrowth, if I am honest). I will read this, and more!
I also like #FrugalAbundance, coined here on Mastodon a little while back - not the same, but just wanted to bring the two together here.
Actually, #Sufficiency also chimes with #LeanLogic and #LeanEcobomics which @DarkOptimism introduced me too - really must read that, too
Wow Our paper "Earth beyond six of nine planetary boundaries" that we published just over a year ago (Sept 2023) has now been downloaded a mind-blowing
half a million times.
It demonstrates the enormous importance of considering the stability of Earth as a whole. We're destabilising our planet in more ways than just climate. We really, really do have to get our act together. #Sufficiency
'Sufficiency is a whole-of-government approach that aims to create the structural change needed for societies to consume less overall. It also seeks to ensure wellbeing for all people, not just the affluent'.
Less is more
Unlike efficiency, sufficiency calls for reducing demand & tackling overconsumption & living responsibly on Earth
It was a huge pleasure today to give a talk on #Sufficiency and #EcologicalDemocracy at the Greifswald Mire Centre @greifswaldmoor, having been invited by @FranziskaTanneberger (who, by the way, is an excellent choice for the prestigious German Environment Award!).
Before the lecture, and a very interesting tour of the facilities, I had a chance to see the protected coastal mire areas of the Succow Foundation, the Karrendorfer Wiesen: Impressive skies, fall colours, and a myriad of shapes.
Dear _ ,
What can I do in this time, in #Lethbridge? Support this or that business, the Farmer’s Market, or eat at this or that restaurant, buy organic food... Do my dollars help in fact to build a community where everyone can live convivial lives, with fair wages
a good quality of life
. I am just one human being, but surely I do quantitatively affect the atmosphere, abundance, sufficiency, & sustainability, with every little choice I make

The city of #Dresden this afternoon.
I'll be giving a talk on #sufficiency, and debating sufficiency with fellow panelists, in just a bit.
The waters of the Elbe river are high, and rising, after the recent massive rainfall extremes further upriver. Since parts of one of the city's main river bridges collapsed a few days ago (luckily in the middle of the night, nobody was hurt) the salvage crews are working hard to clear major debris from the projected floodwater's path.
Exactly a year ago today, our big update of the Planetary Boundaries Framework was published.
It quantified for the first time all 9 planetary boundaries, showed that 6 of 9 are currently transgressed, some substantially, and redefined and refined a few.
The paper has been downloaded a mind-blowing 473.439 times since then. That's an unbelievably large number for a scientific paper.
Let's draw the conclusions.
We need to re-stabilise .

I recently reviewed @paul Brannen 's book Timber! in which he extols the virtues of mass timber as carbon storage. I have been writing about wood for years from a #sufficiency point of view, suggesting that wood is wonderful, but we should still strive to use as little as possible.

This morning, I testified in the German Parliament's Committee on the Environment for @umweltrat on #sufficiency - and heard MP's take on our analysis: that neither the ongoing destabilisation of nature nor huge injustices in the use of resources are compatible with our values as European democracies. Rather than rely on the promises of technologies and economic growth, we should also discuss sufficiency as a "Strategy of the Enough", and a core expression of liberté, egalité, fraternité.
Final day at #eceee2024, and a strong finish. @DidierBosseboeuf of #ADEME gave results of #sufficiency surveys in France. People underestimate lifestyle impact in the environment but support action. Translating this to policy is a challenge.
@HeikeBrugger covered the #newTrends project, with trends that will disrupt the future and what this means for #energydemand. #Digitalisation is one of the big disruptors, which could increase or decrease demand. Accompanying policies are a must.
#eceee2024 Thursday highlights include @AuroraFlipo of the Fulfill project on #sufficiency lifestyles and how they are not available to all. Deprivation is a barrier, whereas home ownership and time affluence increase access to sufficiency.
@SamBetts-Davies presented a study on consumption corridors in the UK. Currently the corridor is very narrow if we are to raise poorer people to a minimum standard needed to participate in society, and some redistribution of wealth is necessary.
#eceee2024 Today there were more talks on #sufficiency. @AlexanderKling discussed a sufficiency policy strategy for the built environment in Germany, with ideas of how best to use existing buildings and avoid new #construction and use space flexibly. There is the tricky question of under-occupancy: living space per person is on the rise in Europe, counteracting growing #energy efficiency in residential buildings.
#eceee2024 Tuesday's plenary - Liberté, Egalité, #Sobriété - focused on #sufficiency.
@YvesMairgnac of négaWatt said there is a growing, but difficult, discussion about sufficiency in Europe. However, outside of France the concept has less traction in policy circles. Sufficiency contributes to policy goals, but sill lacks application.
@CamilleDefard of Jacques Delors Institute suggested sufficiency could be seen as a new social contract, which will require a democratic renewal.
With our discussion paper on #sufficiency published in March in German we hope to initiate a societal debate and promote a calling for a ‘strategy of the enough’. Today we have published a summary in English. Click here to download the text! https://www.umweltrat.de/SharedDocs/Downloads/EN/04_Statements/2020_2024/2024_06_Sufficiency_as_a_Strategy_of_the_Enough.html
The #eceee Summer Study is one of the big events for #energy researchers and practitioners in Europe. Some highlights from today:
@PatrickZimmerman gave a great talk on putting #sufficiency into practice in German building regulations.
Both @ClareHanmer and @TinaFawcett gave interesting perspectives on the cost of living #crisis in the UK, fuel poverty, and what we can learn for the future.
In the morning, it was great to share the stage again with @JoergAltSJ, who always finds straight words challenging the complacent, even criminal upholding of the destructive status quo, and fuses it with action. Later, at a workshop, there was engaging energy after my talk in discussing more practical meanings of #sufficiency in our collective lives. In the evening, it was an honour being a guest at the ACK's ecumenical reception for church leaders across denominations.
