Noam Bergman<p>Final day at <a href="https://sciences.social/tags/eceee2024" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>eceee2024</span></a>, and a strong finish. @DidierBosseboeuf of <a href="https://sciences.social/tags/ADEME" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>ADEME</span></a> gave results of <a href="https://sciences.social/tags/sufficiency" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>sufficiency</span></a> surveys in France. People underestimate lifestyle impact in the environment but support action. Translating this to policy is a challenge.</p><p>@HeikeBrugger covered the <a href="https://sciences.social/tags/newTrends" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>newTrends</span></a> project, with trends that will disrupt the future and what this means for <a href="https://sciences.social/tags/energydemand" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>energydemand</span></a>. <a href="https://sciences.social/tags/Digitalisation" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Digitalisation</span></a> is one of the big disruptors, which could increase or decrease demand. Accompanying policies are a must.</p>
Noam Bergman<p><a href="https://sciences.social/tags/eceee2024" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>eceee2024</span></a> Thursday highlights include @AuroraFlipo of the Fulfill project on <a href="https://sciences.social/tags/sufficiency" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>sufficiency</span></a> lifestyles and how they are not available to all. Deprivation is a barrier, whereas home ownership and time affluence increase access to sufficiency.</p><p>@SamBetts-Davies presented a study on consumption corridors in the UK. Currently the corridor is very narrow if we are to raise poorer people to a minimum standard needed to participate in society, and some redistribution of wealth is necessary.</p>
Noam Bergman<p><a href="https://sciences.social/tags/eceee2024" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>eceee2024</span></a> Today there were more talks on <a href="https://sciences.social/tags/sufficiency" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>sufficiency</span></a>. @AlexanderKling discussed a sufficiency policy strategy for the built environment in Germany, with ideas of how best to use existing buildings and avoid new <a href="https://sciences.social/tags/construction" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>construction</span></a> and use space flexibly. There is the tricky question of under-occupancy: living space per person is on the rise in Europe, counteracting growing <a href="https://sciences.social/tags/energy" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>energy</span></a> efficiency in residential buildings.</p>
Noam Bergman<p><a href="https://sciences.social/tags/eceee2024" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>eceee2024</span></a> Tuesday's plenary - Liberté, Egalité, <a href="https://sciences.social/tags/Sobri%C3%A9t%C3%A9" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Sobriété</span></a> - focused on <a href="https://sciences.social/tags/sufficiency" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>sufficiency</span></a>. </p><p>@YvesMairgnac of négaWatt said there is a growing, but difficult, discussion about sufficiency in Europe. However, outside of France the concept has less traction in policy circles. Sufficiency contributes to policy goals, but sill lacks application.</p><p>@CamilleDefard of Jacques Delors Institute suggested sufficiency could be seen as a new social contract, which will require a democratic renewal. </p><p><a href="https://sciences.social/tags/energy" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>energy</span></a></p>
Tina Fawcett<p>Today at the <a href="https://mastodon.energy/tags/eceee2024" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>eceee2024</span></a> conference <span class="h-card" translate="no"><a href="https://sciences.social/@noam" class="u-url mention" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">@<span>noam</span></a></span> presented a session on the digital transition, its limits and learning from digital sufficiency and needs theory. Really interesting - highlighting additional vulnerability digitalisation can bring. <a href="https://mastodon.energy/tags/energy" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>energy</span></a></p>
Noam Bergman<p>The <a href="https://sciences.social/tags/eceee" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>eceee</span></a> Summer Study is one of the big events for <a href="https://sciences.social/tags/energy" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>energy</span></a> researchers and practitioners in Europe. Some highlights from today: </p><p>@PatrickZimmerman gave a great talk on putting <a href="https://sciences.social/tags/sufficiency" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>sufficiency</span></a> into practice in German building regulations. </p><p>Both @ClareHanmer and <span class="h-card" translate="no"><a href="https://mastodon.energy/@TinaFawcett" class="u-url mention" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">@<span>TinaFawcett</span></a></span> gave interesting perspectives on the cost of living <a href="https://sciences.social/tags/crisis" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>crisis</span></a> in the UK, fuel poverty, and what we can learn for the future.</p><p><a href="https://sciences.social/tags/eceee2024" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>eceee2024</span></a></p>
