These guys weren't Catholics, so this is a little off topic, but it's interesting. Three #Armenian s were arrested and sent to the galleys for dressing as #Muslim s. The generally accepted view on clothes in the early modern #Ottoman Empire is that sartorial laws were applied inconsistently across time and space (on which see Quataert 1997). I wonder what their story was and they were up to… Mischief? 4/?

Today, I'm writing about #Catholic Armenians (real and possibly also unfairly accused) who were sent to the #Ottoman Imperial Shipyard's prison in 1706 and 1707. This was at a time when anti-Catholic #Armenian churchmen and the Ottoman central administration were cooperating to tamp down on Catholicism's spread among Ottoman subjects. They were motivated by several different factors. 1/?

"Demandez qu'on vous montre un pont, un hôpital, créé par l'Empire ottoman en Algérie, vous ne le trouverez pas", assure Zemmour sur BFM. Fake news: le pont El Kantara à Constantine a été construit en 1792 par Salah bey... avant d'être détruit en 1857 par les troupes françaises. A Alger, la première structure hospitalière ottomane fut construite en 1550 et continua de fonctionner pour la population jusqu’en 1854 (Hôpital Caratine).
Rose House, Lebanon
The Rose House is a once-grand palace in #Lebanon. Its name echoes the magnificent roses that previously flourished in the now-disused gardens.
The #architecture combines traditional #Ottoman characteristics with more Western influences. The main living area is typical of historic Lebanese buildings, high ceilings and an internal triple-arch arcade leading to a balcony.

A blind man, Ahmed, carrying his best friend, Samir, a paralyzed dwarf
Samir served as Ahmed's eyes. Ahmed served as Samir's legs
Ahmed was #Muslim
Samir was #Christian

#Syrians: you are all in this together
World: we are all in this together
Another relevant parallel:
Samir was paralyzed because of #polio. Take note, new insane #USA government
Sad but bittersweet note:
When Samir died, Ahmed was besides himself in grief, and died a week later

I met a man today as he was coming off methadone. He was manic but I sat and talked to him for a long time. At the end he told me I was a "disnyat" - no idea how to spell it. He said they were the gatekeepers of the Ottoman empire, 'the ones who open doors'.
Any #history geek in Masto land know what he was talking about? I have done a couple of searches but nothing obvious pops up.
