If you are a Mac user with OCLP, make sure to check your software update settings after the latest patch.
15.4 forces your settings to automatically download and install all new OS updates. And for OCLP users that could cause conflicts if the root patch isn't up to day.
- #elgato StreamDeck
[1/2]
For my first #marchintosh post, some scores from #trashnothing #freecycle over the weekend.
The #iMac apparently had the magic smoke & sparks fly out, we shall see what parts can be salvaged
- An older #ipad
- a few #macpro - Two appear to be the 2012 vintage, the same as my orignal MacPro that I still have. Hopefully candidates for #OCLP
- Some #keyboards
- retro surge srtip
- random ewaste: panasonic land line phone, some cables, spicy pillows,

@baggetun And yet it can keep on going.
I am also running an Apple machine right now from 2015 to reply to you. It was stuck on Catalina. I switched to Linux, though it too can run the latest macOS if you use #OCLP.
It is not obsolete yet, despite what Apple thinks. It runs great. I did replace the battery (which is a job and a half, lots of screws and it was also glued in place) but it now gets around 7 hours of battery life again. I also replaced the charger (it had a cable chewed up by my cat) with a USB-C to Magsafe 2 cable that have it pluged into a cheap 65W USB-C PD charger.
We really need to cut back on #eWaste. Apple, a $3.59 trillion company with massive profits, could do a hell of a lot more here. If they supported them longer I am convinced that people would keep using their old machines or pass/sell them on to someone who might. There is a lot to one of these laptops and they sell millions. It would make a difference. In addition, things like the battery should also be easier to replace and more standardised.
One of my colleagues works remotely and used to do occasional testing on a #Mac. However the Mac he had was left lying around since it was stuck on 10.13 and hence has not been getting security updates since November 12, 2020 and has not even been usable with Vivaldi for a long while also.
We are sending him a newer Apple Silicon based Mac (since that would also allow easier testing of internal builds using iOS simulator) but in the mean time I pointed out that he could upgrade his current machine with #OpenCoreLegacyPatcher, despite Apple preventing upgraded via the regular method.
He went all the way from #macOS #HighSierra 10.13, right up to macOS 15 #Sequoia without any obvious issues. Once again, it is silly that Apple is letting these working machines just be wasted.
@rubenerd the UI flatness that happen in last 10 years is terrible. lack of differentiation between active and static elements has amazing darkpattern possibilities...
my late-2011 mbp runs manjaro for some time now and i've slapped sonoma on it too but just for meaningless stuff like icloud synchronization of other devices.
while open core legacy patcher #oclp allows to install newer macos versions, the old hardware makes sadly a huge difference on use :c
At least one other user who somehow got past the WiFi problems on install (maybe they used alt networking connection via WiFi or ethernet adapter ) having harware issues with the Camera and Keyboard backlight (both of which work with Ubuntu). The post is two years old and these issues might now be resolved but given my WiFi installer issues, I could not count on it. So this does not seem worth the hassle when Ubuntu works out of the box and even macOS Ventura could be installed (again with no obvious downsides) via #OCLP.
I'm putting this down as a fail for Google. Still at least they tried, unlike Apple, who consider this machine eWaste.
FWIW, this old Intel MacBook did get Safari updated yesterday, after using #OCLP to update to Ventura.
Had it been down to Apple, this machine could have been a botnet now for all they care.
I seriously love OpenCore Legacy Patcher (OCLP) . Given my old 2012 Mac Mini new life and works surprising well.
Photo shows my old 2012 Mac Mini running the latest MacOS Sequoia 15.0. Apple stopped supporting this Model with new updates from Version 10 back in 2018.
@matthias I have found @zenbrowser to be a breath of fresh air.
I used to be a BIG Apple fan, but but ever since they pivoted to services, the newer OS versions keep taking more control & privacy AWAY from me, and I refuse to buy newer Macs as they are non-repairable and non-upgradeable.
I still run macOS for the #Affinity suite, but it's become pretty rare. #UltramarineLinux is now my daily driver. It runs better than macOS under #OCLP, and my computers are MINE again.
@vkc@linuxmom.net has this good initial look installing Linux Mint 21 beta, on a 10 year old Mac

First: Love the #cat appearance! What #floof
I'm watching this on my old 13" Mac Pro (2012) still running 10.15.7
Now to decide: #Mint or use OpenCore Legacy Patcher (#OCLP) to install a more recent version of OS X
2012 #MacBookAir upgraded to Ventura thanks to OpenCore Legacy Patcher
Whoa. Turns out the latest #MacOS Sonoma 14.5 runs perfectly on my ancient iMac from 2013, using OpenCore Legacy Patcher. I thought there were issues with Ventura and Sonoma so I had stayed on Monterey (also with OCLP because the last officially supported OS on this machine is Catalina) but those issues have all been resolved. Thanks #OCLP!
I often get app crashes on my #oclp powered 2013 iMac and everything points to SideCar, which I don't even want to use. Can I disable that in the #opencorelegacy patcher options? Didn't find anything...
#macos
@toddalstrom I don't dare to use #OCLP on my 2017 MacBook Air
@flameeyes I understand, set it and forget it is ideal for the family we are the unpaid (but hopefully not unthanked!) IT support for.
I’ve been running #oclp on my own MacBook Pro 2015 and it hasn’t stopped working even once, and if the Discord is anything to go by, a relatively flawless experience is common. However, issues that break your boot are also common.
If you know anyone who wants a project Mac, hopefully you can donate her old iMac to them or repurpose it yourself.
Happy 2024
@risottobias This is the one thing I really dislike about #apple : quick/planned hardware #obsolesence.
They are doing rather good on #ios (way better than #android support) but this can be improved.
On #macos, #OpenCoreLegacyPatcher (#oclp ) proves hardware support is voluntarily removed with each new release.
On both sides, they can provide longer software support even if some new features are not available on older hardware. 1/
@RockyC yeah, I knew that, thanks, but:
- this model has the glued-on screen which looks really scary to remove
- it was easier to add a fast external drive
- #oclp installation onto a Fusion Drive is pretty complex
- I use the Fusion Drive as a Time Machine drive now
I’d rather have replaced the internal stuff, but too much faff for this model
