Sho #Kannon #Bodhisattva Standing Statue, Raigo-ji, Shiga, #Japan, 9th century. According to temple legend, it was floated on the lake from Shoju Raigoji Temple. It has thick lips and long slit eyes, reminiscent of African statues. It is also characteristic that the crown on the head is long. The water bottle is also from that time and is very rare.

The flesh is decorated with gold paint, and the clothes are painted and decorated with cut gold patterns. A four-armed statue holding a staff, a lotus flower, a rosary, and a water bottle in its four hands.

Eleven-faced #Kannon statue, #Kannon-do, Wakayama/Nakui, #Japan, #Heian period. Total height 176cm. A single wooden structure made of cypress. There are traces of base and gold leaf on the crown dais, armpits, and arms. Vermillion on the lips. In 1981, the #Buddha statue and belongings were repaired. Only part of the lotus flesh remains on the pedestal, and the lower part has been cut off.

Prior to becoming abbot, Kōchō had been a professor at Tōkyō University of the Arts and later worked at the Nihon Bijutsuin Kokuhō Shūrijo, restoring priceless Buddhist statues.
He aided with the restoration of statues at Sanjūsangen-dō (三十三間堂).
The jump was seen as an act of faith in Kannon (十一面千手千眼観音). Those planning on making the jump would typically retire for a period of prayer and reflection within the main hall.
In the Genroku era (元禄 1688-1704) alone 20 jumps were recorded.
Day trip to Takasaki (Part 2)
Yesterday, we went to Takasaki, the largest city in Gunma Prefecture. Here is a set of unprocessed, out-of-camera photos from our second stop, the Takasaki Byakue Daikannon. This Kannon statue was built in 1936, and is 41.8m tall.

Gotokuji Temple: Tokyo's Maneki Neko 'Lucky Cat' Temple
I was familar with the Maneki Neko cat figurines but I didn't realise they are representations of a cat that was deified as "Fortune Inviting Kannon"
The line between a God and Bodhisattva seems to be a very fluid one.
