While its certainly true that part of why so much of the US mainstream establishment, particularly in the private sector, is willing to collaborate openly with the fascist Trump regime is because they prefer fascism to sharing, it's also true that there are clear material benefits to legitimizing and supporting the Trumpenreich regime. In what reasonable people would describe as "open corruption," Federal Election Commission data shows that the administration has dropped or frozen federal enforcement cases against "at least 17 corporations that donated to the president's inaugural fund."

'See How This Works?': Trump Drops Cases Against Corporations That Funded His Inauguration

"Public Citizen found that corporations facing federal investigations or enforcement lawsuits donated a combined $50 million to President Donald Trump's inaugural committee. Trump raised a record sum of $239 million for his second inauguration, the new FEC filings show.

"Corporations facing federal lawsuits and investigations aren't giving millions to Trump's inauguration out of the kindness of their hearts," said Public Citizen researcher Rick Claypool. "They are trying to buy good will. And when you're a corporation under investigation or facing prosecution, that means the government dropping enforcement actions against you. In some cases, it may even mean receiving pardons in cases in which guilty pleas have already been entered, or retractions of settlements already entered into."

Bank of America, Capital One, Coinbase, DuPont, and JPMorgan are among the corporations that donated to Trump's inauguration and subsequently had federal enforcement cases dismissed.

Public Citizen noted that Google, which donated $1 million to Trump's inaugural committee, could benefit from the Trump Justice Department's decision during an ongoing antitrust case to scrap part of a "proposed breakup plan requiring Google to sell off AI businesses."

As the article notes, dropped federal enforcement cases against corporations that paid millions to kiss the ring at the Klepto Kaiser's inauguration isn't the only way large corporate actors like Apple, Google, and Coinbase have directly benefited from fascist collaboration. Apple in particular must be delighted with Trump's decision to exempt most of its imports from his absurd tariffs; which seems like a ridiculously good return on its investment of a million dollars for Der Leader's inauguration. Finally, while I personally don't care that much about the regime's decision to monetize the Easter Egg Roll by accepting corporate sponsors, it does speak to the crass levels of greed and corruption the administration and its lawless president are willing to engage in.

On some level I understand that right now it's hard to care that much about bog standard open corruption between the Trump regime and corporate actors happy to normalize and facilitate fascism for five points a share. The Pork Reich is snatching protestors off the street, fighting a war that doesn't exist against a gang that isn't invading us while trafficking migrants to a torture prison in El Salvador, and Elon Musk is firing thousands of federal workers in a scheme to pay for billionaire tax cuts that will absolutely get people killed. There's a lot going on, and "rich capitalists are doing something terrible for their own financial benefit" almost doesn't rate as "news" in an environment like the one we're living in.

The fact is however, it's precisely because of all the other evil fascist shit is going on that private sector collaboration with the Trump regime is such an important story. As I've explained elsewhere: fascism costs American society a horrifying toll both financially and in terms of human suffering, but the installation and operation of a fascist regime can be quite profitable for some. These companies, many of whom also contribute to Republican election funds and political action committees, absolutely know what Trump is and what he means to do because Downmarket Mussolini and his minions say the quiet parts out loud on the regular. They just don't give a fuck, and are happy to help a fascist government normalize its authoritarian activities and odious ideology by touting the support they receive from respected American corporations; as long as doing so pays off on their bottom line.

There are many reasons for the rise of a successful fascist movement in an America that has always embraced what today we recognize as fascist ideology; trying to pin it down to one specific factor is a fool's errand. But if and when the history of this era is written, I'm willing to bet that rampant greed and a ruling class that lusts for power over the rest of us will rank pretty highly on the list of contributing factors to this political moment.

Since January, Trump has launched a broad offensive to assert power over regulatory agencies that were created by Congress to operate without direct control from the White House.

That assault has included an effort to assert control over the Federal Elections Commission ( #FEC ), potentially making it easier for Trump to tilt elections in the GOP’s favor.

Charged with administering and enforcing the federal campaign finance laws and investigating campaign finance violations, the FEC is key to upholding the integrity of federal campaigns, reducing political corruption and providing transparency about who is spending money on federal elections.

Trump last month moved to fire Ellen Weintraub, a Democratic member of the commission, without cause, something no other president has ever done.
Weintraub hasn’t filed a lawsuit challenging her dismissal, but former FEC officials believe the attempt is likely illegal.

Whether through a lawsuit over Weintraub’s dismissal or challenges to other firings, courts
— specifically the Supreme Court
— could ultimately give Trump the ability to fire FEC commissioners.

Daniel Weiner, a director at the Brennan Center for Justice, told Democracy Docket that would
“significantly” increase the possibility of the FEC being weaponized against Trump’s political opponents, as his administration would have increased influence to weigh in on its regulatory and enforcement decisions.

“What we’ve seen with this administration is that they really do seem to want to go after their enemies,” Weiner said.

“No other president in recent history has been so overt about weaponizing the government against his political opponents.”

Additionally, Trump may sign an executive order that dissolves the leadership of the U.S. Postal Service and incorporates the service into the Department of Commerce, according to the Washington Post.

Doing so would give Trump and his political appointees direct control over the agency that handles mail ballots.

Experts told Democracy Docket that not only could this shake voter confidence in mail voting, but the administration could make voting by mail more difficult by changing postage requirements for mail ballots or influencing how states mail ballots to voters.

Hey, would you believe me if I told you that the President signed an executive order on February 18th that gives Trump, a guy who tried to make election officials declare him the winner of an election he lost (and launched a coup attempt when that didn't work) and has been talking about shutting down media organizations that criticize him, essentially complete control over the previously independent Federal Election Commission and Federal Communications Commission? I mean probably not right, since for-profit media has barely covered the issue even though it has a direct impact on their industry. Unfortunately, it's true:

truthout.org/articles/independ

Independent Agencies Oversee Elections and Media. Trump’s Seizing Their Reins.

"The order states that, “The heads of independent regulatory agencies shall establish a position of White House Liaison in their respective agencies,” and goes on to say: “Independent regulatory agency chairmen shall submit agency strategic plans … to the Director of OMB for clearance prior to finalization.” In other words, independent agencies will no longer be independent but will instead be ruled over by political commissars, their every action now scrutinized to make sure they are ideologically sympatico to the aims of the MAGA movement.

Two of the agencies subject to this new system are the Federal Election Commission (FEC) — a historically bipartisan, six-member organization that helps to set ground rules for how elections are run and financed — and the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), which, among other things, controls access to the country’s airwaves.

Trump has been angling for control of both of these agencies since the start of his administration."

Is any of this legal? Who the hell knows; but are you willing to bet a 6-3 fascist-high Supreme Court that has already endorsed the idea that Trump is above the law and the existence of an imperial presidency, are likely to stop him? I'm certainly not. Furthermore, to mount any sort of mass resistance to this type of "classic" fascist power grab ultimately targeting elections and media criticism of the regime, you'd probably have to know it's happening and understand why this executive order might be the single most dangerous thing Trump has signed since he took office again; and clearly for-profit media and a political class doing more collaborating with fascism than resisting it, don't consider informing you about this very relevant right now.

Folks, I dunno about you but I'm getting tired of waiting around for Trump to find his Reichstag Fire and finish crafting a multi-executive order version of the German Enabling Act while Very Serious PeopleTM keep pretending we don't know if Trump is going to go full Hitler and mustn't presume he means to do everything he openly says he's doing. We all heard this guy on tape pressuring election officials and even GOP Governors to "find" him thousands of votes and effectively rig the 2020 election for him. We're all watching as his Project 2025 nazi minion Brendan Carr uses his newfound powers as head of the FCC to threaten the broadcast licenses of media orgs that criticize him, try to shut down PBS and NPR, and even investigate media companies that the regime claims "promote diversity" like that's some kind of crime. So when Trump, the imperial president, passes an executive order that gives him complete effective control of the agencies that regulate American elections and what passes for the "free press" in the United States, you'd have to some kind of credulous rube to believe he's doing so for any other purpose besides rigging elections for fascists and eliminating whatever portions of the US media there are that won't carry water for the fascist administration and the odious ideology animating it. There's not a lotta wiggle room here; either you're a complete fucking muppet, or you're willing to quietly bootlick for a fascist President while he rips pages directly from Hitler's playbook to create his very own American Pork Reich.

I guess the only question left then, is which of those two possibilities best describes an American political and media class supposedly opposed to Trump's fascist regime, that doesn't want to talk about it before it's too late to stop him?

National Democrats sued Friday to stave off what they say could be President Donald Trump’s destruction of impartial campaign finance regulation by the Federal Election Commission saying Trump’s executive order taking control of all independent agencies in the Executive Branch means the #FEC could now be weaponized against Trump’s political adversaries in ways it was designed to prevent in the aftermath of Watergate. politico.com/news/2025/02/28/f

"In claiming to fire a COMR of the FEC, the pres. violates the law, the separation of powers & generations of SC precedent.

Congress explicitly, & intentionally, created the #FEC to be an independent, bipartisan federal agency whose commissioners are confirmed by Congress to serve the vital role of protecting the democratic rights of American voters."

BUT WE SAW PICTURES YESTERDAY! DID TRUMP VOTE TWICE?????

Mr. Trump will benefit from a 2021 New York State law that allows felons to vote as long as they are not incarcerated.

Sentencing is now expected on Nov. 26, when Mr. Trump could face probation or up to four years in prison.

Mr. Trump had initially said he planned to vote early but ultimately decided he would vote in person on Election Day.

As we get closer to the election, I have realized something which is important to the #fediverse, be it #Mastodon, #Misskey, or any other #instances...

Elon Musk, the person many people fled Twitter to avoid is now effectively a member of Trump's inner-circle, and should Trump win, he will have direct influence over the #FCC and #FEC. The consequences of this will be disastrous, not only because it will end all regulation of his businesses, but will allow him to directly attack the Fediverse using regulatory levers. While it's not clear if there is any legal backing for this, most #US based #servers cannot handle this.

This is on top of the partisan fight over #NetNeutrality, which Trump went after during his time in office, but Harris will likely protect, just as previous Democrats did.

That is why I have no choice, not simply as an #American citizen in a marginalized group, but #TechHub's head of #moderation, to tell my fellow American users to vote for Kamala Harris.

Our #Network may depend on it.
