Ellis bans ensemble programming

Reading how "7 days of work was done in 5 hours", I am thinking back on how #EnsembleProgramming made a 6-month work be ready in a week.

We have no idea of the size of a thing before we implement it. I wish we weren't asked to guess, buffer and overexplain when we learn.

I get joy in the fact that the rename started with me and @deniseyu when it spreads to sources I consider somewhat more authoritative.

Are there any directories of companies that do ensemble programming? I know it’s niche, but I think if companies were to specifically make it part of their hiring pitch (and then actually follow through of course), it would be a big selling point. #pairprogramming #ensembleprogramming #mobprogramming

This week as manager included something very much akin to #EnsembleProgramming and oh my, that was powerful. I learned that people don't know things they should know. I learned that things come too fast without sufficient reflection to turn them to learnings. I learned that people could succeed better given more clarity through limiting things we are learning simultaneously.

I already made changes to provide slightly better support. I still think we should pair / ensemble more.

With #EnsembleProgramming, we talk about time together being worthwhile as long as we are either #Learning or #Contributing. Today I need to add that learning the same thing every day again is not really what I mean by learning. Learning should accrue. We need to figure out ways of practicing in a way where we are likely to retain information.

I just migrated from https://hachyderm.io/@mattwynne which was , but I have been meaning to move over here for some time because I love the initiative to democratically run our social media!

I'm from the UK originally, now based in Nelson, BC.

I'm a generalist/polyglot programmer. I lead the https://github.com/cucumber #opensource project and I'm known for coaching teams in technical practices like #TDD/#BDD and #EnsembleProgramming.

Finally making it to #AgilePDX #mobprogramming #ensembleprogramming #meetup tonight, after attempts for the past several months. I’m so excited. I #softwareTeaming & #collaboration. And getting there on #Trimet #bus. I’m lucky to have 2 routes nearby my house. (Also, it’s very hard to type on the bus.)

Cameras on. The facial expressions and body postures of the folks you're coding with is important information. Otherwise the person who talks the most "wins." Working as a team means learning to read each other. #EnsembleProgramming #SoftwareTeaming

Having so much fun doing #TDD in #EnsembleProgramming that I didn't notice I was getting hungry.

Stomach: Hey. TDD doesn't feed me.
Me: Well it does, indirectly.

People still seem to think that for geographically distributed teams, meeting face to face is the key to success. I am of opinion that working together, like actually working together #PairProgramming, #EnsembleProgramming and sharing work as real team is much more key than traveling to meet people.

The perceived distance is almost as much of a choice as the physical distance. Show up for people, every day.

The power of working as a software team:
- 3 people are working on a feature. I join them. 1 person leaves.
- We implement part of a feature, which helps me understand what's going on. I take a turn at driving and we implement another part.
- 2 people leave for lunch, since we're in different timezones. Another person joins.

Now, none of the original people are here, but the work keeps moving forward. #SoftwareTeaming #EnsembleProgramming #MobProgramming
