Do you want to help preserve the social media accounts of closed DEI programs in the southern US? Do you have some free time right now and don’t mind repetitive tasks of downloading images & pasting descriptions into spreadsheets? I promise you, it goes pretty quickly once you get a system!

Invisible Histories started a program to download and archive DEI programs’ social media content before they are taken down. You are assigned a couple years for a specific DEI office to archive and upload to Google docs. Read more about the program and sign up here: bit.ly/DEIAVolunteer

“Born This Way, Digital, is our program specifically designed to preserve materials that are created (or born) digitally. If you are a digital content creator and would like 1. backup storage space for your files and 2. to have your files digitally archived with Invisible Histories, visit our site: invisiblehistory.org/born-this.

Courts Are Coming for #DigitalLibraries

A federal court recently said the #InternetArchive is not protected by #FairUseDoctrine.

C.J. Ciaramella | From the December 2024 issue

"In September, a federal appeals court dealt a major blow to the Internet Archive—one of the largest online repositories of #FreeBooks, media, and software—in a #copyright case with significant implications for #publishers, #libraries, and #readers.

"The U.S. Court of Appeals for the 2nd Circuit upheld a lower court ruling that found the Internet Archive's huge, digitized lending library of copyrighted books was
not covered by the 'fair use' doctrine and infringed on the rights of publishers.

"Agreeing with the Archive's interpretation of fair use 'would significantly narrow—if not entirely eviscerate—copyright owners' exclusive right to prepare derivative works,' the 2nd Circuit ruled. 'Were we to approve [Internet Archive's] use of the works, there would be little reason for consumers or libraries to pay publishers for content they could access for free.'"

Today 6 Sep 2024 I'll be joining a panel at Ars Electronica (State of the Archive: Current Approaches to Digital Archives and Archives for Digital [Art]), organised by Vanessa Hannesschläger, I’ll announce the Distributed Archive project which allows to simultaneously search the Neural and V2_ websites and archive, an outcome of the The Alex Adriaansens Residency I’ve been awarded in 2023 and join the discussion on “current approaches to digitizing, preserving and (subsequently) presenting cultural heritage” with Katharina Pektor, Sandra Sonnleitner, and Chiara Zuanni. The panel takes place at POSTCITY, First Floor, Lecture Stage, between 15:00 – 16:00.
