I'm about to install #Fedora42 on a neighbours new computer.

I know, I'm a glutton for support complexity.

But I think, having tried a bunch of OSes last year, while I didn't personally like Fedora for some specific reasons. It seemed really stable and suitable for end users compared to many Debian based systems that seemed to be falling all over themselves recently.

Maybe it's money. Perhaps it's organisation. not sure.

I did the thing.

Manjaro caused me a lot of update Fatigue. Therefore: Switched to #Debian 13. Yes, it's still in Testing but at this time probably more stable than most stable distros.

Also switched to gnome because why not?

Me, yesterday: "Oh, nice #Debian #trixie is on its way to stable, that means I could already start upgrading my laptop and maybe test a bit while getting newer software…"

Me, today, after pressing "U" in aptitude, followed by 3 hours of manual conflict resolution because the auto-resolver runs out of memory, has now at least found a sweet spot to upgrade the first quarter of all packages…

aptitude package overview before actually installing them: • Packages to be upgraded (494) • Packages to be installed (1) • Packages being automatically installed to satisfy dependencies (260) • Packages to be removed (35) • Packages being removed because they are no longer used (231) • Packages being held back (352) • Packages being automatically held in their current state (2060)

Mój pracowy wół roboczy aka komputer został zainstalowany gdzieś w okolicach 2014 jako Debian 7 aka Wheezy.
Od tego czasu był aktualizowany przeżywając przy okazji

- wymianę dysków x2 (ssd -> ssd -> nve)
- wymianę procka, płyty, pamięci x2 (intel -> amd -> intel)
- aktualizacje od wersji 7 do (obecnie działającej) wersji trixie (przyszłej wersji 13 stabilnej).

W sumie nie pamiętam żadnych większych problemów (jakieś małe się zdarzały, zwykle związane z niestandardowym oprogramowaniem, które w którymś momencie dorzuciłem).

Generalnie u mnie jest to pinpong: co do zasady pracuję na wersji testowej debiana, jest ogólnie wystarczająco stabilna jak na moje potrzeby, tylko w momencie jej stabilizacji na kilka miesięcy przechodzę na wersję stabilną i czekam aż następna wersja testowa się trochę uleży, by ponownie się na nią przełączyć.

W miażdżącej większości przypadków zwykłe apt (wcześniej apt-get) bez zająknięcia przeprowadzało proces od a do z bez najmniejszego problemu.

Wiem nikogo, ale dla mnie #debian to naprawdę świetny przykład stabilnie tworzonego systemu od dziesięcioleci, co jest koszmarnie ważne jeśli mówimy o środowisku do pracy.
Które nie musi być funfell-nówka jak Ferrari czy inne BMW modnego kolesia na dzielni ale za to, jak ten stary pickup dziadka działał 10 latemu, działa dzisiaj i można sądzi, że za dziesięć lat też będzie działał.
