🔴 **Sutton Hoo and Syria: The Anglo-Saxons Who Served in the Byzantine Army?**

_“I am arguing that it is likely that the men buried in the princely burials at Prittlewell and Sutton Hoo mound 1 served, with a group of their contemporaries, as cavalry soldiers in the Foederati recruited by Tiberius in 575 in the wars with the Sasanians on the eastern front.”_

Anglo-Saxons may have fought in northern Syrian wars, say experts

These finds put the Anglo-Saxon princes and their followers centre-stage in one of the last great wars of late antiquity. It takes them out of insular England into the plains of Syria and Iraq in a world of conflict and competition between the Byzantines and the Sasanians and gave those Anglo-Saxons literally a taste for something much more global than they probably could have imagined.

Day 18:

I've always been interested in the history of the #BritishIsles. Today, I'm recommending a historical novel, the first of #TheSaxonStories, #TheLastKingdom.

It is set at the end of the 9th century and follows the rise + reign of #KingÆlfredTheGreat of the West + then the #AngloSaxons.

Italian deputy PM Matteo Salvini is furious with Jens Stoltenberg’s suggestion that NATO weapons should be allowed to target Russian soil and has called on him to retract those worlds or resign. Salvini said:

“I don't want to leave my children in the third world war at the gates... #Stoltenberg should either recant or apologise or resign.”

I don’t think it’s occurred to the some of the geniuses in NATO that if Ukraine strikes Russia with our weapons, they won’t be retaliating on Ukrainian soil, they’ll be striking ours - and they have the capability to strike anywhere in Europe within 20 minutes with ICBMs or 90 minutes with conventional missiles. It’s worth emphasising a recent UK report shows we have no defence capability to stop Russian missiles.

Bonjour ! #Introduction

Je ne sais jamais quoi dire ici, sans doute parce que je suis l'archétype du mec trentenaire blanc cis de classe moyenne sans intérêt. Le genre de profil omniprésent sur le Web et qui gagne à se faire discret.

The latest Map Men video is fun! About why north is up on a map (and when it is not - some interesting non-historical examples there).

https://youtu.be/B14Gtm2Z_70

I saw one of the 'east is up' maps he mentions in an Anglo-Saxon exhibition a few years ago (available online at the British Library:
https://www.bl.uk/collection-items/anglo-saxon-world-map) - obviously their knowledge of geography was quite basic back then so things are a bit weird (though surprisingly detailed in parts!), but I found it really fascinating to see how different 'the world' (as they knew it) looks when rotated by 90 degrees.

22nd April, Today we commemorate the last British #Pagan King, and last king of the #IsleOfWight Arwald.

On this day in 686, Cædwalla, King of Wessex invaded the #Jutish kingdom of Wihtwara, the land of Whit [ ᚹᛁᚻᛏ ] (Spirits / Supernatural Beings).

Arwald had sent his two son to his kinsfolk, the Meonwara to keep them safe.

Due to their superior size, the army of Cædwalla were victorious. However, not without many casualties. #Folklore says that Arwald dealt Cædwalla a near fatal wound that never healed and would ultimately take his life many years later. The story says, that the last curse, uttered using the last of the old magic was from Arwald's lips as he struck Cædwalla.

After the battle, Cædwalla sent his men the commit genocide on the island. A memory that still runs deep on the Island, even to this day.

The two princes were also betrayed after they had been forced to convert to #christianity -- Cædwalla had them killed.

This is not the of the story, the sister of Arwald was the wife of the King of #Kent and was the great great great Grandmother of #AlfredTheGreat. One could argue, the line of Wiht is behind the whole of the British royal family.

Quite and interesting article:

English speakers know that their language is odd. So do people saddled with learning it non-natively. The oddity that we all perceive most readily is its spelling, which is indeed a nightmare. In countries where English isn’t spoken, there is no such thing as a ‘spelling bee’ competition. For a normal language, spelling at least pretends a basic correspondence to the way people pronounce the words. But English is not normal.

PocketEnglish Is Not NormalNo, English isn’t uniquely vibrant or mighty or adaptable. But it really is weirder than pretty much every other language.
