Élévation du chœur de la cathédrale de Clermont-Ferrand

POINT VOCABULAIRE : L'ÉLÉVATION

L'élévation d'une église (ou d'un bâtiment architectural en général) permet de décrire ses niveaux dans un système de coupe et donc de critiquer l'harmonie générale de l'édifice. C'est aussi en décomposant les éléments qu'on peut deviner le style/période, etc... C'est donc quelque chose d'assez important.

On décrit toujours l'élévation d'une travée (décomposée par la retombée des voûtes) tout simplement parce que plusieurs nefs différentes peuvent avoir plusieurs styles de travées.

Pour une travée du chœur de la cathédrale de Clermont-Ferrand, qu'on voit ici, l'élévation commence par de grandes arcades soutenues de piles fasciculées (c'est à dire des piliers qui semblent faits de plusieurs colonnes). On monte ensuite vers un triforium (qui peut être une galerie dans un autre édifice). Je reparlerai de ce qu'est un triforium et de pourquoi c'est mon élément préféré de toute l'architecture gothique tous styles confondus ! Dans notre cas, il présente trois baies géminées par travées. Survient ensuite une claire-voie constituée d'une verrière gothique et les piles s'évasent dans une voûte quadripartite.

La présence du triforium, sa délicatesse, la taille de la claire-voie et l'absence de chapiteaux sur les piles de la travée indiquent une volonté de finesse, de verticalité et d'ouverture à la lumière typique du gothique rayonnant (ce qui est bien le style auquel on fait face ici).
