Disturbing Hunting Practices in Idaho

According to records from the #IdahoDepartmentOfFishAndGame, gruesome details have emerged about the #killing of #wolves in the state, including #pups as young as one month old. Since 2021, over 1,400 wolves have been killed through #trapping, #hunting, and other inhumane methods, like shooting wolves down from #helicopters and running them down with #snowmobiles.

The report highlights several other disturbing practices,

Extinction politics is only practiced by the most deplorable people. I really hope indigenous trappers will not succomb to this deviancy and will not help make wolverine extimct in Alberta like is is in 90% of its former territory.

These agents of extinction are everybody's enemy. Stop them. There's better non-lethal techniques.

With only 15 breeding pairs of #wolves left, Oregon's wolf population can't afford to lose the Frazier Mountain Pack. This pair of proven parents and their growing pups are a vital ray of hope for the future of their #species.

Tell #ODFW: Stop shooting wolves.

Wolves need our help now more than ever. While the Endangered Species Act (#ESA) protects wolves across most of the continental U.S. from #hunting, #trapping and more,

These wolves deserve to live. Tell the ODFW: Don't destroy the Frazier Mountain Pack.

It's simple: Nobody should be allowed to shoot #EndangeredSpecies.

#Wolves once thrived all across #America, but a century ago, targeted #hunting and #trapping completely eliminated wolves from #Oregon.

Only in 2008 did wolves slowly begin to return to Oregon. Their numbers are increasing, but their #population is still fragile with fewer than 200 wolves in the entire state.

_The Evening Post_, 21 August 1924:
             LIFE ON KAPITI
A considerable improvement in natural conditions on Kapiti Island is recorded in the annual scenery-preservation report of the Under-Secretary of Lands…. The destruction of #goats and the removal of #sheep … is having a marked effect on the young forest growth, and countless seedling plants are to be seen along the old tracks. Forty-nine goats were killed during the year, and it is known that about forty still survive. They have become very alert, and at the slightest sign of danger take refuge on the inaccessible cliffs along the western side of the island. Most of the privately-owned sheep have been removed from the Crown portion of the island. Very few of any kind are now to be seen in the northern half, but in the south a large number of wild ones of little or no value continue to graze on the open country and among the scattered clumps of manuka and tauhinu.… it will probably be necessary to destroy them. Opossums have been kept in check by #trapping, 1850 having been taken in this way during the year. In October, 1923, seven kiwis were liberated.… there is reason to believe that they are increasing m numbers.

This #investigation, conducted in collaboration with Farm Transparency Project, reveals the Victorian Government Department of Energy, Environment and Climate Action’s (DEECA) cruel #trapping and #shooting of Victorian Dingoes. Sadly, all Australian states undertake similar programs to kill Dingoes.

I'm sad this dog suffered and agree signage must be mandatory for trapping areas. I'm also curious why we defend our domestic animals against this pain and suffering but are ok when it happens to wild animals? The person grieving the pain to her dog in the article states her family also participates in trapping. How long would a coyote, fox or wolf, cousins of dog, be trapped and in pain before the trap was checked and it was killed for its pelt? #Animals #Trapping

Better news out of #Oregon.

“Beavers and #humans have this in common: They both work to alter the flow of water to their own benefit. Unfortunately for both parties, their activities are sometimes at odds.

“Beavers are land managers like farmers,” said Brian Bangs, #aquatic #ecologist for the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. “They don’t always see eye-to-eye, but some values are shared.”

In the past, #trapping or #Killing has been the main way to control those beavers disturbing operations on the farm with their dam-building. But lately, #scientists, #tribes, #Conservation groups and landowners are re-discovering ways to work with nature’s pesky engineers, according to the Mid-Willamette Beaver Partnership in Oregon.”

A grizzly mystery - why are bears losing toes?

Answer: Their get feet caught in marten traps & lose the toe from loss of blood circulation & tissue damage. This may affect their ability to catch food & may drive them toward easier targets - our houses & camps.

Bringing #beavers back to #colorado

"In the time of Enos Mills, and until relatively recently, #beaver were abundant in the Estes Valley, Tahosa Valley, and in many parts of North America. Locally, there were beaver dams and lodges at Lily Lake and along Fish Creek. There were also beaver colonies in Rocky Mountain National Park (RMNP), creating and maintaining habitat for many other species. A good example of a thriving beaver colony can be seen from Fish Creek Road, west of the intersection with Rockwood Lane. But now, beaver are rare in this area. What happened? Outside RMNP, #trapping, #grazing, #logging, and human settlement took its toll on beaver populations. Inside RMNP, #overgrazing by ungulates like elk, and now moose, eliminated willow habitat beavers depended on and turned the marshes into dry meadow."
