a hotel near the District of Columbia from a roll of Agfa Vista 200, taken around late summer 2013 | are you on Bluesky? it seems that there's a growing (and maybe flourishing) pool of photography enthusiasts there these days. i signed up to spread the word about exposur.es and share more about the project, but engagement has been very minimal so far. i'm so baffled by its success because when i began reaching out to artists about exposur.es, i was met with sighs and resignation. most people told me that they didn't have the energy to start over, yet so many posts on Bluesky are roughly 'starting over is hard, let's work together to rebuild!' posts of people trying to find their old mutuals from Instagram or X. i even ran into a fellow Pixelfed and Mastodon user writing threads about how Bluesky is the future where we should build anew and how we should push hard to make it work, despite the pitfalls and vulnerabilities of a corporate-controlled, centralized platform that will be at the mercy of new corporate laws from the incoming administration here in the so-called US.

in full transparency, i'm hitting a wall here. it would seem that most people simply want to go where everyone else is and are content with complaining about the issues rather than putting in the effort to address them or subvert the system. this could be said about a lot of topics, of course, but it never stops being surprising and this is a very tangible example of this dynamic playing out. i'd like to keep exposur.es running, however, i feel it needs to pivot from its current form. the reality is that, despite the advantages an open-source, decentralized platform provides, Pixelfed, unfortunately, in a number of ways doesn't seem to meet the mark where it counts. it caters to replicating the Instagram experience rather than providing features for people to share their stories via their photographs.

a faded yellow building, a hotel of sorts, with rounded balconies centered in the frame, shot from a low angle, likely at the street level. triple-pane horizontal windows line the balconies on each side and appear to have a ruffled or pleated curtain in the windows—typical of a hotel of this style and era. each balcony has a brown slightly brassy railing with numerous posts lining the bars, resembling a type of fencing. the top-most window on the left side is open halfway, allowing passage of the late summer breeze. the sky is a very pale blue, mostly a result of the exposure being metered for the hotel's midtones. there is a faint blur as if the image is just ever-so-slightly out of focus. the film stock gives the image a peachy-magenta hue in the highlights to midtones range and a medium grain visible on the hotel walls.
