@unusnemo @Christian_Freiherr_von_Wolff I don't use Tor to be anonymous. I use it as a tool for my privacy. I don't log into websites from it, I do my regular procrastination browsing from it, news reading on corporate websites and so forth.

It's great at preventing #fingerprinting Especially #Whonix with its #Kloak software that stops companies fingerinting your keyboard and mouse #DNA.

I use #Tor more as a STFU to data agencies.

Using #mullvad with #VPN is the nest best thing.

@unusnemo @Christian_Freiherr_von_Wolff My use of my Desktop goes this way...

I have a VPN on all the time for my PC. I use this to do all of my internet of things.

I use #Mullvad with #VPN.
When I do not yet trust a website, or am just browsing the clear web for general use, I do it through a #Tor browser on a #WhonixVM instance.

I don't generally browse .onion websites unless the site I am on specifically tells me from the browser that it has an .onion version to bookmark.

This subject keeps coming up. I'm the one who keeps bringing it up. This is by design. Please stop spreading misinformation to the effect that connecting to a VPN before Tor is inherently dangerous.

I watched Jonah Aragon's video, linked below, when I first started learning about online privacy. I saw it before I found out about a lot of the incorrect ideas he talks about, and I'm thankful I learned those things in that order and not the other way around. He also wrote an article about this, also linked below, which I'd somehow never read until now; it's also fantastic.

I have to wonder where some of these ideas even come from, honestly.

One of things I suffer on #FreeBSD using an #Iranian connection, is that all package mirrors are terribly slow.

Currently, as a workaround, I'm using #proxychains with the FreeBSD package manager. Unfortunately, setting a SOCKS5 #proxy through pkg.conf does not seem to work.

Using a proxy or a #VPN is not a big deal for a typical developer based in #Iran. But it's the first time I have to change IP(and route) to properly use an OS's first class package manager.

Maybe I could host a mirror for Iranians if FreeBSD stays as my main OS. Tho I don't see much point with only myself being the FreeBSD user in here.

f your PPTP server is NOT doing IP-forwarding and NAT-translations, there's an high probability that you'll experience "filtering", in case of missing ip-forwarding or "asymetric routing" (in case of missing NAT) between your notebook and your.ec2.ip.address:

Since I'm a few hours from the end of this week, I want to mention what I've done so far to #reclaim my #digital life & protect my #privacy: Use #Mullvad #VPN. Downloaded all my files from #Google #Photos, deleted everything from said service (& #Onedrive for the matter), cancelled my Google One #subscription. I installed my own #Joplin #server for my notes. Switched to #DuckDuckGo but simultaneously, testing #Searx #instances. Baby steps ahead but still, steps ahead. Next step, NextCloud.

So, #ExpressVPN brings a brand new #Linux app with full GUI that supports many new features (that are still available in the CLI version). Currently in Beta.

ExpressVPN pense enfin aux utilisateurs de Linux qui préfèrent les applications graphiques en leur proposant une nouvelle version 4 pleine de nouvelles fonctionnalités.

#VPN question, I've noticed a TON more problems using VPN from other countries, not just speed but pages failing to load and stuff, is that common and would a static IP plan help with that? VPNs in the US are much faster anyway but I didn't exactly get a VPN in 2025 because I trust US stuff
