@neil

Yeah, I completely agree.

Europeans, you all have once in a lifetime chance to save one form of digital art, Games! For everyone!

Currently game publishers can take away your access to games when they shut down authentication servers.

This EU bill aims to give users the ability to keep using the assets they paid for offline, on their own computers.

Sign up and save a bit of your culture! Brought to you by EU MPs and Gaming fanatics.

The #StopKillingGames #Initative is back, well for #EU Citizens it's still signable here: eci.ec.europa.eu/045/public
But for #UK Citizens there is a (new) #Petition singable here: petition.parliament.uk/petitio
With 10,000 signatures in the UK, the government has to respond and with 100,000 the parliament apparently is going to discuss it.

Reminder: With >1Mill on the #EUCitizensInitative site the @EUCommission has to act, the #EUParlament can even discuss and act on it etc.

So go and spread the word!

The UK Petition Is Open!
The UK government petition to stop publishers destroying games now open! Here is a link to it:
petition.parliament.uk/petitio

While we originally launched this last year, it ended prematurely due to Parliament dissolving and the government misunderstood what was being requested, so it was never completed or answered satisfactorily. This time it's been relaunched under a new Parliament and reworded for clarity, so it should maximizes our odds of getting a conclusive answer as to whether the UK will consider acting on this issue.

Please consider signing it if you are a UK citizen or resident!

Petitions - UK Government and ParliamentPetition: Prohibit publishers irrevocably disabling video games they have already soldThe government should update consumer law to prohibit publishers from disabling video games (and related game assets / features) they have already sold without recourse for customers to retain or repair them. We seek this as a statutory consumer right.

Hi Fedi! :ablobfoxbongohyper:

Have you ever thought "We should prohibit publishers from irrevocably disabling video games they have already sold" ?

You're in luck!
The UK petition for it is open for signatures!

petition.parliament.uk/petitio

For the EU, here's your reminder that the ECI petition is still open: eci.ec.europa.eu/045/public/#/

You might as well do your yearly round of signing petitions while you're at it. They all last for a year and most are about subjects that are even more important than video-games: citizens-initiative.europa.eu/

For everywhere else, or just more details, there's always the website: stopkillinggames.com

And the latest Ross Scott video about the UK petition: youtu.be/NQnZ91mUB0E

The new #StopKillingGames UK petition is now available to sign. The last one was closed when parliament dissolved earlier this year. If you care about video game preservation, digital ownership rights, or just about being able to play the things you've bought as long as you want, please sign and share it.

It might not result in direct change, but it would force the government to at least acknowledge the issue. And given starmer's current government ineptitude, they will want to find any easy PR wins,so there might actually be some chance of meaningful response here.

An update has finally be released, as the petition has been tabled in the House of Commons:

Response by the Minister of Innovation, Science and Industry
Signed by (Minister or Parliamentary Secretary): THE HON. FRANÇOIS-PHILIPPE CHAMPAGNE

The Government of Canada would like to thank the petitioners for expressing their concerns on the issue of the planned obsolescence of video games.

The Government of Canada is committed to promoting the interests and protection of Canadian consumers as well-informed and confident consumers help stimulate competition and innovation in the Canadian marketplace. Federal agencies and departments are responsible for enforcing legislation related to various issues, including: consumer product safety, consumer product packaging and labelling, and anti-competitive practices, such as price fixing.

Additionally, consumer protection is a shared responsibility between the Government of Canada and provincial and territorial governments. On the specific matter of the planned obsolescence of video games, this matter is best addressed at the provincial and territorial jurisdiction given their responsibility over issues related to buying goods and services and contracts.

Sooooooooo tldr... "Not a federal issue, go to your provincial or territorial legislators"....
