Wow. I’d bet they’d REALLY love this idea:
Congratulations to Giulia Strippoli, whose SMS - Shared Memories of Solidarity project has been selected for funding by FCT under the RESTART programme.

#German sign says "Achtung!! Das Spiel Ist Aus!!" — Not sure what it means, but apparently it means "Danger! The Game Is Over!" — These people know a thing or two about #Nazism and #fascism.
Another says, "There Will Be #Hell #Toupee" with a caricature of #Trump hair-do.
Yet another: "Hey #Technofascist #Broligarchs, Clean Up After Your #DOGE" — Good one!
Also a WHOLE BUNCH of "Hands Offs"

Nearly all modern medical treatments trace back to #NIH-funded research. Now hundreds of active grants are being terminated, jeopardizing progress against cancer, Alzheimer's, infectious diseases and more. https://buff.ly/HhK60HP #ScienceFunding
Do researchers from prestigious universities have an unfair advantage in securing research funding? A new study on China's #NSFC grants confirms the #MatthewEffect — the rich get richer in academia:

Should funding be prestige-blind? I'd advocate for anonymized applications to prevent institutional bias.

Private foundations give $30B annually for science and health research, and 60% stays local. A data scientist explains how this local focus contrasts with how researchers typically work, with national or global teams of experts. https://buff.ly/4jD5uxQ #sciencefunding #philanthropy
The Swiss National Science Foundation invested CHF 961 million in over 5,000 research projects in 2023, which demonstrates Switzerland's commitment to scientific excellence. However, some brilliant ideas are left unexplored due to financial limitations. We need more funding, diversity, and collaboration to ensure that every rejected proposal doesn't become a missed opportunity for innovation.
brilliant video by Sabine Hossenfelder about her personal experiences in science - should be required viewing by all science funders

We've got two research posts looking at research culture and funding policy open. Thought they might be of interest to your followers. Thanks

This is a fascinating story from a philanthropic science funder who decided to fund metascience initiatives. I didn't know how many of the improvements in science the last decade-and-a-half were funded from private purses and not national funding agencies!
It's also food for thought that many of the most successful initiatives received funding with seemingly no application process.

4/ Lack of public funding for critical software repositories and open access publishing is a concern. These platforms are integral to scientific research and collaboration, and they require stable funding for long-term sustainability. #OpenAccess #ScienceFunding

Summary of the important conversations to help improve transparency and reporting of #ScienceFunding from @HLdeJonge @MsPhelps and @crossref colleagues:

Excellent insights into technical and business issues in this area.
Helping to facilitate the discussions between funders/publishers/publishing platform providers at this workshop was a pleasure and an education. Thank you to all participants!
Looking forward to the next workshop on this topic.
Well that was quick:
"Four researchers in the University of Oxford’s Mathematical, Physical and Life Sciences Division have today been awarded major European Research Council Starting Grants, part of the Horizon Europe programme."
https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-66731164
"UK expected to re-join Horizon science scheme"
Thank goodness for that, and about time too. Looking forward to being able to make plans with EU collaborators with more certainty about how it'll all work!
