"A Merry Life and A Short One" is a compact collection of my essays about pirates and piracy as examples of anarchy. In the course of the book I discuss pirates of the Golden Age historically and politically and make a case for exactly why they are actual anarchist examples. This book would be perfect for those who want to read about pirates or who want to examine the meaning and consequences of anarchy.

Today in Labor History April 10, 1919: Mexican troops ambushed and assassinated Emiliano Zapata, revolutionary indigenous and peasant leader. Zapata’s Rebel Army of the South played a major role in the overthrow of the dictator, Porfirio Diaz, defeating the federal army in the Battle of Cuautla in 1911. Also in 1911, Zapata began implementing the Plan de Ayala, redistributing land in the regions controlled by his army to peasant farmers. However, when former revolutionary Madero took over, he disavowed the Zapatistas, calling them simple bandits. He implemented a scorched earth policy, burning villages and imprisoning survivors in forced labor camps, in his quest to hunt down Zapata. Madero’s successor, Venustiano Carranza, continued his scorched earth policies and finally succeeded in killing Zapata in 1919.

About 10 years ago, or more, I said in a talk in a basement ping pong bar “if you don’t want the robots, that build robots, to put guns on the robots; don’t put guns in the warehouse they pick from.” #AI #Agents

Someone put guns in the warehouse.
Same applies to bank card details. If you don’t want #AI accidentally spend all your money, don’t give it your bank card.

Convenience is a trap you spring on your self.
Dependence is the goal.
#rebel by learning, rebel by doing things yourself.

I want my local #community to be able to write software that serves our needs (and disengages dependence on software apps that are in the process of enshittification).

To that end, I'm learning #lowcode techniques. Perhaps I'll eventually be able to teach non-coders how to regain power over our own digital lives and ecosystem.

Recently, I wrote a self-hosted n8n workflow that automatically transcribes and summarizes the notes I speak during my morning walk. It's a start.

Self-hosted Tools: cloudron, n8n, syncthing, whisper-asr-webservice

I really enjoyed today, actually I enjoyed yesterday too - I went swimming 🏊🏼‍♀️ on both days. I’m still not very fast but I can manage nearly 1.5 kms in just over an hour & did it on both days. I have definitely improved since the beginning of the season. It’s not how fast I am really, just the fact I’m doing it, but I do like knowing I don’t need a little break after every lap.
I mucked up my new swim goggles 🥽 though, they have an anti fog on the inside & I used a glasses cleaning cloth & apparently that’s a no no! I’m supposed to just rinse & let them air dry. Anyway, I took them into Rebel to ask if there was anything I could do to fix it & I can’t. The lovely saleslady though gave me a new pair & marked the old pair as faulty 😁. This lady has served me before & I thought she was awesome & helpful then, now I know she is. #GoodService #Rebel #Exercise #Swimming #EnjoyingLife
