"President Donald Trump’s administration wants to force people in the U.S. applying for green cards or citizenship to fork over their social media handles, in a move with far-reaching implications as the government cracks down on #ProPalestine activists.
"U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services, or #USCIS, which oversees naturalization and immigration, earlier this month proposed requesting social media names from people in the U.S. who apply for asylum, permanent residency, or naturalization, expanding a policy that used to only target people living abroad applying for visas.
"The proposal references Trump’s day-one executive order laying the groundwork for a new #MuslimTravelBan, which also asked federal agencies to identify #immigrants in the U.S. who hold '#HostileAttitudes” toward the government.
"'This policy would disparately impact #Muslim and #Arab applicants seeking #USCitizenship.”
"The shift would affect an estimated 3.5 million people per year — some of whom have lived in the U.S. for decades.
In light of #ColumbiaUniversity #protester #MahmoudKhalil’s ongoing detention, one official from a Muslim civil rights group said the new policy poses special danger for critics of #Israel and the Trump administration.
"'This policy would disparately impact Muslim and Arab applicants seeking U.S. citizenship that have voiced support for #Palestinian #HumanRights,' said Robert McCaw, director of government affairs at the Council on American-Islamic Relations. 'Collecting the social media identifiers of any potential green card applicants or citizens is the means to silencing their #LawfulSpeech.'"

BRUNSWICK, Maine (WGME) -- "Pro-#Palestinian students at Bowdoin have no plans to shy away from speaking out after a pro-#Palestine student-organizer at Columbia was detained.
"#MahmoudKhalil, a permanent U.S. resident, was arrested a week ago after his involvement in protests at Columbia University.
"He's being held by immigration in Louisiana but has not been charged with a crime.
"Olivia Kenney, a student-organizer at Bowdoin, is currently in New York protesting for Khalil's freedom.
"She tells us his detainment and the expulsion of students across the country is not deterring students from taking action.
"'I am seeing people on campuses across the country and in New York continuing to rise to the occasion. I heard from some of the expelled students who were speaking yesterday and talking about how you can expel a student, but you can't remove their conviction, you cannot remove commitment,' Kenney said.
"Justice Department lawyers have argued the U.S. Government is seeking Khalil's removal because Secretary of State Marco Rubio has reasonable grounds to believe his activities or presence in the country could have 'serious adverse foreign policy consequences.'
"Rubio says the U.S. will likely revoke more student visas in the coming days."

George Mason University suspended its Students for Justice in Palestine chapter and effectively kicked out the group’s co-president.

"In the early morning hours of November 7, more than 12 police officers showed up outside at an address in Springfield, Virginia, knocked, broke down the door, and raided the family home of two Palestinian American students at George Mason University.
"University and Fairfax County police refused to show the family the warrant. One Fairfax County detective with the FBI’s Joint Terrorism Task Force — cross-designated as a local and federal agent — was also present. The family and Mason faculty supporting them, however, believe they know what the FBI-led investigation was about: the young family members’ pro-Palestine activism.
"Two of the Palestinian American family’s daughters attend George Mason. One is an undergraduate student and the co-president of Mason’s chapter of Students for Justice in Palestine. The other is in a master’s program at Mason and a former president of the school’s SJP chapter.
"The authorities told the family the raid was related to a spray-paint vandalism incident at George Mason’s campus in August — part of the widespread campus protests related to Israel’s war on Gaza. In September, the university police department put out flyers offering a $2,000 reward for information about the incident.
"In short order, the school’s SJP chapter was suspended. Soon after, George Mason Police Chief Carl Rowan Jr. served the sisters with criminal trespass notices barring them from campus for four years — meaning that they can no longer continue their education.
"'I’m worried for our students and I’m concerned for our schools,' said Mason professor Ben Manski, the SJP chapter’s faculty adviser. 'There are still no allegations and no charges that I’m aware of. Without those, we can’t have due process, we don’t know what is behind these actions, and we can’t know whether the public interest is being served or harmed.' "

A group of pro-Palestine protesters briefly delayed the annual Macy’s Thanksgiving parade in New York City on Thursday, leading to delays and 21 arrests.
"Protestors started blocking the parade after entering past the barriers on W. 55th St. and 6th Ave. A little over a dozen demonstrators can be seen in footage sitting down with a large sign that read, “Don’t celebrate genocide,” “free Palestine,” “land back” among other messages.
"Pro-Palestine protests have sparked up in the nation in the midst of the ongoing Gaza Strip war between Israel and Hamas, which launched on Oct. 7, 2023 after Hamas attacked. Per ABC News, more than 41,000 people have been killed and more than 96,700 have been injured to date."
