The Universal Declaration of Human Rights, 1948 represented a milestone in the recognition of the universal rights of every human being following the unprecedented horrors and mass expulsion of World War II. The Declaration declares that all rights and freedoms it sets out are universal, and without exclusion due to race or ethnicity, religion, gender identity, language, political or other opinion, nationality, social origin, property, birth, or any other status.

Today, 192 member states of the United Nations have committed themselves to this declaration. And yet, governments and international organisations have continually undermined and neglected the obligation to protect refugees.

Across the world, people are forced to leave their homes; fleeing conflict, persecution, climate change, or a lack of basic care. While seeking safety, refugees and migrants often end up in camps, detention centers or on the streets, while states, such as the EU member states, work hard to prevent people accessing the right to seek asylum.

We call on all states to uphold their commitment to the UDHR, and to respect and protect human rights for all!

Everyone has the right to a life free from persecution.

No one is illegal.

Violation of
Human Rights, in any country and at any scale, should be condemned by all irrespective of caste, creed, religion, financial and social status, and political orientation. There is no valid reason not to care about human rights. We must stand up and raise our voice when anyone’s human rights are denied or everyone's rights are undermined.

Whenever and wherever human rights are violated, I agree with the corresponding global and local protests while respecting the local laws.

Let us understand better from the
preamble of Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

Whereas recognition of the inherent dignity and of the equal and inalienable rights of all members of the human family is the foundation of freedom, justice and peace in the world,
Whereas disregard and contempt for human rights have resulted in barbarous acts which have outraged the conscience of mankind, and the advent of a world in which human beings shall enjoy freedom of speech and belief and freedom from fear and want has been proclaimed as the highest aspiration of the common people,
Whereas it is essential, if man is not to be compelled to have recourse, as a last resort, to rebellion against tyranny and oppression, that human rights should be protected by the rule of law,
Whereas it is essential to promote the development of friendly relations between nations,
Whereas the peoples of the United Nations have in the Charter reaffirmed their faith in fundamental human rights, in the dignity and worth of the human person and in the equal rights of men and women and have determined to promote social progress and better standards of life in larger freedom,
Whereas Member States have pledged themselves to achieve, in co-operation with the United Nations, the promotion of universal respect for and observance of human rights and fundamental freedoms

United NationsUniversal Declaration of Human Rights | United NationsA milestone document in the history of human rights, the Universal Declaration of Human Rights set out, for the first time, fundamental human rights to be universally protected. It has been translated into over 500 languages.

Finally, after nearly a year in prison, the charges against the #Pylos9 have been dropped. The argument is that the shipwreck happened outside of #Greek jurisdiction. From the beginning, the Hellenic Coastguard and #Frontex should have been the ones sitting on the court bench and held responsible for one of the deadliest shipwrecks in the last decade! Instead, 9 innocent people, who had just survived a shipwreck, were wrongfully arrested.

We demand justice for all survivors, including the at least 650 people, who died due to the inactions of Frontex and the Hellenic Coast Guard!

500 dead and missing children
In the last 10 years, at least 500 children have died crossing the Central Mediterranean Sea. Each of these losses is one too many.

According to records from the International Organization for Migration, 16695 people have died or gone missing while fleeing across the central Mediterranean since 2014. At least 500 of these were children. The true number is higher due to unreported shipwrecks.

The legitimate desire for a safe life is so high that people on the move have to choose the dangerous route across the #mediterranean again and again. Tragically, 2% die during that crossing.

Everyone has the right to live in peace!
We call on the #EU to invest its funds in protecting refugees and combating the causes instead of criminalising and degrading people escaping conflicts, persecution, and starvation. Shame on you EU.

No one is free till they are all free
The ridiculous case against the @IuventaCrew has been dropped after 7 years. This case has attracted a lot of media attention, but there are many other cases ongoing and people held across the world in pretrial detention.

Louise Michel stands in solidarity with those whose cases are not as high profile. To remember the names of those currently facing criminal charges by Europe for upholding their right to claim asylum and putting themselves at risk of trial to save the lives of others.

Louise Michel stands in solidarity with Maysoon, Marjan, Ahmed, Ali, Abdel Rahman, Mohannad, Mohamed, Wilson, Arboob, Walid, Anthony, James, Houmayoun, Aymas, Fares, Gun, Ibrahima Bah, the El Hibu 3, Cutro 4, Pylos 9, Moria 6 and all those detained by Europe and beyond.

Freedom of movement for all! Human rights for all! Wishing for a life of freedom and dignity is not a crime!

Kidnappings following interceptions by the Tunisian Coastguard.

There are reports about kidnapping by criminal gangs at the Tunisian ports following interceptions by the Tunisian Garde National (TGN).

Yesterday, we spoke about how invisible shipwrecks are on the rise, caused by poor-quality iron boats departing from Tunisia. Those who survive and are intercepted by the TGN are expulsed to desert areas on the Libyan and Algerian border. However, sometimes, when transfer buses aren't available, they are left at #Sfax port by the TGN. There are increasing reports from local media and testimonials from survivors, of kidnappings of people on the move by criminal gangs, with ransoms being demanded for their release.

Whilst #Italy strengthens their cooperation with Tunisia, we see just how unsafe a place it is for people on the move. We stand against Europe's deal with #Tunisia and call for #EU money to stop financing these human rights violations.

The EU’s partner in crime!
Once again, we see the EU-funded so-called Libyan coastguard (scLCG) carrying out extreme acts of violence during a rescue operation in international waters, which has now resulted in the wrongful detention of a rescue ship. The scLCG are well documented for carrying out extremely dangerous manoeuvres, resulting in the capsizing boats in distress, however, now a more regular occurrence is the firing of live bullets.

Just days ago, the scLCG was caught on camera firing at @RescueMed 's RHIB whilst carrying out a rescue of 58 people, risking the lives of all those onboard. Even though the dangerous criminal actions of the scLCG resulted in mass panic and people jumping into the water, Mare Jonio has now been detained for 20 days by Italy, accused of encouraging "migrants to jump into the sea" to hinder the scLCG operation. Shouldn't it be the ones carrying out the unlawful vicious attack being charged?

Last month we also saw footage of the scLCG firing shots during a rescue being carried out by @soshumanity_en. Humanity 1 was also detained following the false report from scLCG, this was later dropped, but only after the civil court in Crotone called it an "injustice of the measure issued".

Louise Michel stands in solidarity with the 58 survivors rescued by #MareJonio. We call on the EU to investigate this crime and to stop the funding of the violent scLCG. We call for Mare Jonio’s immediate release.
