Academic institutions in #Israel are facing escalating academic boycotts and collaboration challenges. A report by the Committee of University Heads details hundreds of incidents, including publication difficulties, funding obstacles, and severed institutional ties. The trend, particularly impacting collaborations with European and US institutions, is attributed to the ongoing “conflict” and evolving political climates.

Israeli researchers are facing challenges in getting their articles published in scientific journals, and they are also finding it difficult to obtain recommendations from international colleagues.

The boycott is impacting access to research funding, with some international researchers reportedly requesting Israeli researchers to withdraw from joint projects to avoid repercussions.

Even when formal institutional boycotts aren't in place, individual researchers are reporting reluctance from international colleagues to continue research collaborations and projects.

The article highlights the actions of #Ghent University in #Belgium, which severed academic ties with Israel, citing concerns about human rights. This university also attempted to influence other institutions and the European Commission to further isolate Israeli academia.

According to them, the administration's policies have begun to lead to "a change in the rhetoric of higher education institutions in the US, which emphasize the preservation of institutional neutrality." The authors cautioned that "the mood in Washington is simultaneously creating a counter-movement, mainly among faculty members who call for the preservation of freedom of expression on campuses, the preservation of the right to demonstrate, and often also support for the boycott movement." Identifying Israel with the Trump administration, it was written, "may complicate the Israeli academy's future relations with universities abroad, with an emphasis on universities in Europe, whose academic leadership does not support the new narrative promoted by the Trump administration in the American academy."
