Fish farming - a false economy

Salmon farming is a drop in the ocean of Scotland’s economy, 0.2 per cent according to the Scottish government, yet its impact is disproportionately devastating. This is not a sustainable homegrown industry, it is Scottish taxpayers subsidising foreign-owned corporations whose loyalty lies not with Scotland but their bottom line.

Fish farming - a continuing threat to our environment

Pal Mugaas, head of communications for the charity Norwegian Salmon Rivers, said he was “very afraid” that the aquaculture company Scottish Sea Farms (SSF) would hasten the wild salmon’s decline with its plans to build large open-pen “ocean farms” in Scottish waters.

The signs of climate breakdown - oir at least violent changes - continue to mount. But still the p[olitical will seem to be 'burn baby burn'.

The Guardian · Campaigners call for action as jellyfish threaten Scottish salmon farmsBy Matthew Taylor

Reading this is infuriating. Seemingly fish farming is misunderstood and the high deaths are because of climate change (Icve heard this from colleague whose husband is in the fish farming industry) which means that jellyfish and algal blooms increase mortality.

Which sounds increasingly like fish farming in Scotland is decrasing in viability. So we maybe shouldn't be going so hard at farming fish? Like reduce the densities of fish and farms...

Missed this alarming FT investigation earlier this week 😬

The tl;dr is that European #salmon farming - long touted as #sustainable - is destroying West African food security and biodiversity.

Turkey is the world’s second-largest producer of farmed sea bass and sea bream, with an annual output of over 200,000 tons. This intensive aquaculture negatively impacts the environment, such as water pollution, habitat destruction, and disease outbreaks. Some Turkish fish farmers are adopting more sustainable practices, such as organic certification, recirculating systems, and integrated multi-trophic aquaculture. #Turkey #FishFarming #Sustainability

Today I was banned from #Facebook because I shared a screenshot of a letter in a local newspaper.

The article criticised #fishfarming prominent position in the media. I believe that #trollfarm were used to make this picture flagged as #fakenews . Similar things happened when I shared another screenshot from Canada #fishfarms. This morning I was lazy and shared the image instead of searching for the link. I am surprised how the blue F silences activism. Is that legal?
