So interesting to watch the remains of #Murnau's German #expressionist period in this first of his Hollywood master art works! What a waste of talent, when he died in a carcrash in 1931 (aged 42).

If this is not a story about the strength of love, than which one is? I do wonder if the premisse would be 'digged' nowadays. But that does not take the edge off the ingeneous camera visuals, great acting (Janet Gaynor tops it) ànd storywise dramatic impact of #Sunrise..

January 03 - the birthday of #German painter August Macke (1887-1914) who was a leader of Der Blaue Reiter (The Blue Rider), an influential group of #Expressionist artists. His style was formed within the mode of French Impressionism and Post-impressionism and later went through a Fauve period. Macke's career was cut short by his early death in WWI at the front in Champagne, France

Turkish Café (1914) by August Macke. In April 1914, August Macke, together with Paul Klee and Louis Moilliet, undertook a trip to Tunis that later became legendary. Under the impression of the southern light and the more intense effect of the colors, his art experienced a final improvement. According to Moilliet's recollection, the motif was the covered entrance at the foot of the stairs to the then famous Café des Nattes in Sidi-Bou-Said.

Längmatte at Moonset (1919) by German #expressionist artist Ernst Ludwig Kirchner has its origins in what the artist referred to as a “madly beautiful” experience of nature. Kirchner printed this woodcut from several blocks, each inked in a different color, which he placed precisely next to and on top of one another in such a way that the colors overlap.

The artwork created in extravagant colors depicts the mountain landscape across the Längmatte, with the Altein massif on one side and the Tinzenhorn in the background.
