So, years ago, when I was being taken to court over a debt that didn't belong to me, the #ConsumerProtectionAgency gave me enough information to be my own lawyer and have the case thrown out (the debt in question was under someone else's social security number, and I demanded to see the loan paperwork, which proved the loan wasn't mine. #CPA provides advice and help to ordinary citizens (not #megarich #techbros and orange #grifters)!

Ok I have asked every person I know, all over the US, for a #tax #accountant reference.

The only person who admits he uses an accountant for his taxes said his guy is retiring and has no name to give me...So is this guy going to leave his steady clients in the lurch?

Why won't anyone give me a recommendation? It's not like a #CPA would only be able to handle one person as their client! I'm not stealing them. They wouldn't share any personal info. It's not a gynecologist (and I would certainly recommend my doctors to friends). WTF??!

You’re a business owner, and you have cybersecurity insurance. Then, tragedy strikes. You experience a ransomware attack. You immediately deal with the expense. You replace some equipment because your IT person says that’s the best way to be certain your network is clean. Next, you file a claim with your cybersecurity insurance agent – and the claim is denied, because you didn’t have a security program in place. What? What security program?

Business owners who actually read their cybersecurity insurance policy are sometimes surprised to discover that they have obligations. Clients give me their cybersecurity insurance policies to review, and ask me if they’re in compliance. At that point, I end up helping them draft their very first set:

1) Acceptable Use Policy
2) Cybersecurity Policy
3) Incident Response Plan (with step-by-step reporting)
4) Business Continuity and Disaster Recovery Plan

Most (all?) cybersecurity insurance policies include requirements the company must adhere to. Without these functional policies and plans in place, the insurance company will most likely deny the claim. This stuff isn’t optional any more.

Even small businesses, like CPAs and law firms, need to establish a program appropriate for their size.

Priority #3: Cutting business tax rates

Look, Maureen, I don’t think you understand what position you’re actually standing for.

Last time around, you wanted to use mayoral powers to eliminate equal marriage. Now you want to use them to change tax rates.

THAT’S NOT HOW THIS WORKS.

This is like applying to be a Starbucks barista because you want to change the dividend paid to shareholders.

Continued thread

Winning an out-of-court settlement doesn’t mean your employer was wrong to sack you. For that, you need a ‘wrongful dismissal’ case. Maureen didn’t win a wrongful dismissal case.

An out-of-court settlement meant the company decided it would be cheaper to make her go away than to fight her ridiculous claims. How much cheaper?
No idea. How much was the settlement? Also no idea.

Continued thread

Thirdly, Maureen was sacked for her behaviour and then ‘a year later she won an out-of-court settlement’.

This is going on the list of weird admissions. I’m going to rate it above the ‘international author’ thing, way below the ‘hate crime’ thing, and maybe slightly below the ‘I support a different party than the one I’m standing for’ thing.

I won ‘an out-of-court settlement’ isn’t vindication, Maureen.

@davetron5000 The ultra-rich have better options for deductions, including lower #taxes on #capitalgains because that's not regular income under US tax laws. I'm not a #CPA, but AFAIK 1099 income is still "income" taxed at income rates—unless it's corporate income, which is taxed on net. #Authors & authors' estates assign #copyrights & #residuals to corporations or trusts for exactly these reasons, among others. If you get substantial #royalties, talk to an accountant or tax lawyer!
