@dec_hl I think something like an #App #curator site that allows #filtering / has said filters set by default as a "#SafeSearch" would be propably best...

Not to mention it'll get #downranked and #shadowbanned from both platfirms pretty quickly.

Exactly that is true: #Fragmentation kills the EU!

That's why there's no #AndroidPit #AppCenter anymore!

Thanks again to @dw_innovation / #DWnews for that video.

In OS 8 we’re expanding your access to apps even further by including the most popular app store for Linux out of the box: @flathub

You’ll be able to access apps made specifically for elementary OS, apps made for Linux, and popular cross-platform apps like Discord and Spotify all directly from #AppCenter without having to manually sideload or configure an alt store.

Further testing @elementary I am very happy I eventually could fix the annoying "hanging screen" bug, which was due to a bug of the #i915 graphics driver. Now the whole experience is a lot better thanks to the great hint of @mikael I only read by chance.

Now I hope the remaining glitches of the very important #AppCenter and #SoftwareUpdates parts are fixed before release of #OS8, because they don't seem stable enough to me right now.

Ubuntu’s App Center Updated, Can Now Open/Install DEB Packages

Ubuntu’s Flutter-based App Center can now open and install 3rd-party DEB installers. An App Center update that adds support for ‘side-loading’ DEB packages began rolling out to users on Ubuntu 24.04 LTS in the past few weeks (but as snaps update in the background silently, without any indication or alert, I only just noticed). To be clear: this is about being able to install DEB packages you download from the web (e.g., Google Chrome, Discord, Steam, Vivaldi, Slack, etc) using App Center. It’s not about installing DEBs from the Ubuntu repos, which was already possible. With this update it is :sys_more_orange:

DEB Installers in Ubuntu App Center Coming Soon

One of the biggest drawback to Ubuntu’s new App Center, the Flutter-based replacement for GNOME’s Software Center, is that it doesn’t let you install DEBs downloaded from the web. To be clear (since confusion often creeps in) the Ubuntu App Center does allow you to install DEB software so long as it’s the Ubuntu repos. What it doesn’t (currently) do, which the many software center incarnations over the years did, is ‘side load’ DEB packages. But, at long last, this feature is coming. On the App Center Github there’s been a spurt of activity in a pull request to plumb :sys_more_orange:

The Odd-Looking ‘App Center’ Icon in Ubuntu 23.10 is Being Fixed

About a week ago I noticed the icon for App Center (the Flutter-based software store-front that replaced Ubuntu Software in 23.10) had changed — and not for the better! At first I assumed it was a snafu caused by me. See, I only noticed the change when I was playing around with scaling options (I was seeing whether 200% scaling on my 2K laptop screen was as bad as I remembered, or if it was just me being a fop for fractional scaling). Anyway, it wasn’t a “me” thing. As App Center is a snap (snap-store ) it gets updated :sys_more_orange:

Installing Deb Packages in Ubuntu 23.10 is Harder Than It Should Be

When you double click on a deb package in Ubuntu 23.10 an error will say “there is no app installed for Debian package files”. In this post I show you how to work around it. Most of us are accustomed to double-clicking on local deb files to install them (even Chrome OS lets you do this from its native file manager if the Linux development environment is turned on). But in Ubuntu 23.10 it doesn’t work. The spangly new App Center in Ubuntu 23.10 isn’t (currently) able to open, handle, or install deb packages downloaded from the web (despite said :sys_more_orange:

Ubuntu 23.10 is Available to Download, This is What’s New

Get ready to grab the bull by the horns as Ubuntu 23.10 ‘Mantic Minotaur’ is now available to download. This update is a short-term release supported by 9 months of ongoing support, bug fixes, and critical app updates. While it may not sound long (because it isn’t, all told) remember that Ubuntu 24.04 is out in April 2024 as a long-term support release with 5 years of support. Summarising Ubuntu 23.10 in just one word is tricky, but ‘refinement’ feels an apt choice. @ocdtrekkie @catraxx @EU_Commission yeah.

Same with the #EU making VAT mandatory to be paid at the customers' juristiction and not the tax avoidance juristiction of the #GAFAMs, which basically killed a lot of superior domestic competition like #AndroidPit's #AppCenter which had way more favourable terms for customers AND developers/publishers!

Sadly there's neither #ACTA nir #TTIP so the owners couldn't sue the #EU for the added costs and loss of profit...
