The World Federation of Trade Unions, the most historic international trade union organisation, representing more than 105 million workers all the length and breadth of the world, sends a cordial and militant message to all the workers and farmers, to the ordinary people of toil and labour, on the occasion of International Workers Day, which constitutes a lasting and bright milestone of struggle. This year’s May Day coincides with the 80th Anniversary of the WFTU, which was born in the ashes of the most destructive war in the history of humanity in the revolutionary fresh air of the great anti-fascist victory of the peoples with the Soviet Union at the forefront, and completes 8 decades of continuous and uninterrupted struggle for the rights of workers, for justice and social progress, against all forms of discrimination, against wars and imperialist interventions, against may by man exploitation. Both the messages and demands of the Chicago pioneers of 1886 and the needs that inevitably led to the establishment of the WFTU remain relevant and necessary today. The crisis of capitalism deepens and is generalized. Social inequalities are widening dramatically. Democratic freedoms and trade union rights are under attack all over the world, and the imperialist wars and interventions are on the daily agenda. The genocide of the Palestinians in Gaza and in the West Bank, the bombing in Lebanon and other countries of the wider Middle East region, with the support and encouragement of the USA, the EU, and their allies, continues, revealing in all its grandeur the hypocrisy, cynicism, and inhumane nature of imperialism. At the same time, global defence spending rose to 2.46 trillion USD last year, with big budget increases in countries of Asia, the Middle East, North Africa, and Europe. Notably, there are examples of countries that are almost doubling their defence spending. At the same time, the USA President Trump calls for a minimum spending of 5% of GDP among NATO members, and the EU Commission Summit decided to finance 800 billion euros for military armament within the ReArm EUROPE project. The shift towards a war economy is clearly a priority for the ruling circles of capitalism, as it incites profitability for multinational monopolies and the expansion of the geopolitical power of developed imperialist states. These new massive increases in military spending, apart from being a threat to global peace and security, also mean even harsher austerity policies and widening social inequality. The resources that would be destined for families, workers, and ordinary people are cut and diverted to rearmament, and civil and social rights and liberties are placed under guardianship, because in the preparation for war, different opinion are not allowed. The WFTU and the class-oriented trade unions strongly condemn the war preparations of the bourgeoisie. The popular strata have nothing to expect from a new widespread and generalized war but death, poverty, destruction, refuges, and hardship. We demand spending for the contemporary needs of the workers and the peoples. We demand adequate education and healthcare and not weapons. We demand dignified working and living conditions and not ammunition and missiles. We demand spending on culture, sport, and recreation, and not fighter aircraft and naval vessels. We demand measures against rising inflation and living costs that erode living standards. We oppose privatization, outsourcing, and flexible forms of work that intensify the precarious employment and exploitation, alongside extended retirement ages. The Workers and social achievements are under relentless attacks and challenges undermining labor rights, collective agreements, and democratic freedoms. Workplace safety remains neglected, causing daily injuries and fatalities. Despite global challenges, workers do not passively accept the anti-labor offensive on their rights and freedoms. Millions mobilize worldwide for dignified work and the protection of trade union and social rights with the WFTU members to be firmly at the forefront of these struggles. The response of bourgeois governments to the just popular demands is the sharpening of state repression and authoritarianism. At the same time, employers and governments are attempting to manipulate labor struggles, betting on the role of yellow unions and compromised trade union leaders. In our era it is obvious that the prerequisites for truly dignified working and social living conditions for all workers exist in abundance. The class-oriented trade union movement fights so that the huge productive capabilities are not utilized to increase the profits of capitalists and create unimaginable wealth for a few, but to ensure dignified living and working conditions for those who create and produce the wealth. Organization and struggle is the only path that can overturn the existing realities of misery, exploitation, and social injustice. The weapon of workers everywhere is solidarity and internationalism. The WFTU remains firmly committed to these principles. It continues its 80-year path with the same vision that inspired its founding: for a world without wars and imperialist interventions, without exploitation and discrimination. A world where work will be permanent, stable, regulated, and safe. On the occasion of May Day 2025, the WFTU calls upon the class and militant trade unions around the world to take initiatives and organize this year’s campaign and activities under the slogan: Their profits or Our lives – Hope lies in peoples’ struggle ΝΟ to war economies YES to the class struggles: -against the imperialist wars and interventions, -against capitalist exploitation, -for the satisfaction of the workers’ contemporary needs. Let the WFTU flag proudly wave along with the flags of the militant trade unions in the uninterrupted class struggle for stable work with rights, social security, free public, and universal health and education, a dignified life. This will be the highest and proper celebration of the glorious 80-year course of struggles, sacrifices, and dignity of the international class-oriented trade union movement. LONG LIVE MAY DAY! LONG LIVE INTERNATIONALIST SOLIDARITY! LONG LIVE 80TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE WFTU!
#Politic #Statements

Tens of delegates from trade unions from all over the world, unanimously adopted the documents of the Congress. During the Congress the new Executive Committee of the TUI was elected, to lead the TUI in its future struggles. The WFTU wishes all the best to the new leadership and the elected bodies of the TUI, and expresses the sureness that the implementation of the decisions of the 20th Congress will be a strong reinforcement of the class-oriented trade union movement in the crucial sector of Education. On the framework of the Congress the delegates participated in a massive demonstration in solidarity with the Palestinian people in the city of Rabat.
#Politic #Statements

The conditions created by our Moroccan comrades guarantee that this Congress will be successful and worthy of all our expectations. FISE is a valuable pillar for the WFTU. It expresses the struggles and demands of a group of workers whose object is education, learning, culture, and ultimately the consciousness formation of the new generations of every society. It is one of the longest-operating TUI of the WFTU, founded just one year after the establishment of the WFTU, and its history is rich in struggles and creative contributions to the achievements related to education as well as the intellectual and cultural development. It is true that in recent years, FISE has not been as mobilized and active as we would have wished. Organizational, financial, and other problems have limited its activity and presence. That is why I am confident that our conference here in Rabat will be a new dynamic start. The discussion that will take place here, the exchange of experiences, the decisions that will be taken, will constitute a guideline for action that will lead us to the new struggles that await us, and the fresh and renewed leading bodies that we will elect will, I am sure, undertake the burden and the noble responsibility of organizational reorganization and a more active and productive operation of this historic International. Dear colleagues, brothers and sisters, Our era is characterized by the generalization and deepening of the capitalist crisis, which is accompanied by new attacks on workers’ rights and achievements, a dramatic widening of social inequalities, further environmental degradation, and reckless overexploitation of our planet’s natural resources. The genocide of the Palestinians in Gaza and in the West Bank, with the support and encouragement of the USA, the EU, and their allies, has once again revealed in all its grandeur the hypocrisy, cynicism, and inhumane nature of imperialism. Global geopolitical and economic rivalries continue to directly threaten world peace and security, even with the risk of nuclear destruction. Imperialist wars, interventions, sanctions, and blockades continue and intensify. The USA, the EU, and their NATO allies are announcing new massive increases in military spending, which, apart from being a threat to global peace and security, also mean even harsher austerity policies and widening social inequality. Nowadays, the shift towards a war economy is clearly a priority for the ruling circles of capitalism, as it ensures profitability for multinational monopolies and the expansion of the geopolitical power of developed imperialist states. Harsh and intense attacks continue against the labor and social achievements and the democratic and trade union freedoms. The high cost of living and inflation are brutally undermining workers’ and pensioners’ living standards. Unemployment, precariousness, and the overexploitation of cheap labor of vulnerable workers due to mass economic migration or refugee flows, as well as anti-popular and anti-labor legislative measures systematically promoted by neoliberal governments, have significantly undermined labor with rights and regulated collective agreements that reflect the modern needs of workers. Individual contracts, privatizations, outsourcing, teleworking, and “service leasing” are just some of the forms taken by this harsh neoliberal attack. The authoritarian and arbitrary increase in retirement ages continues methodically. Major social achievements such as public education, social security and public health are being privatized. Thousands of workers are killed or injured daily due to the lack of measures to protect against workplace accidents and occupational diseases. Safety and health at work are seen by employers as undesirable costs that reduce their profits. This attack is, of course, also faced by the workers in the education sector that all of you delegates at this conference represent. It is obvious that for the dominant circles of global capitalism, education is not a public good to which everyone is entitled rightfully and equally, but is still a commodity that must be profitable. Hence, education is continuously privatised, state expenditures are constantly shrinking, and responsibility for public education is shifting onto the parents themselves and, consequently, onto the popular strata. The attack against universal, free, and quality education has not only economic incentives. The education sector shapes the consciences of the new generation and the bourgeoise aims in the creation of a new shift of the working class which will not be overall educated but fragmentary and superficially trained as tool in the market need, a new shift of the working class that will be taught a falsified and distorted history and will be socially indifferent and ideologically conservative. Consequently, FISE and the progressive teachers also have a crucial task to defend the scientific, quality, progressive, and human-centered education. The attack on the rights and achievements of teachers continues, as their work is increasingly becoming precarious and temporary, without security and without employment contracts, with humiliating wages and with all the consequences for the quality of the education they provide. The encouraging and hopeful element in the depressing picture of today’s world, is the fact that workers do not passively accept the neoliberal capitalist, anti-popular, and anti-labor offensive. Millions of workers around the world are choosing the path of struggle to defend their trade union, social, and political rights. With militant mobilizations in every corner of the globe, they are demanding work with rights that ensures the satisfaction of their contemporary needs. The WFTU members or friends are always on the frontlines of these struggles. The response of bourgeois governments to the just popular demands is the sharpening of state repression and authoritarianism, and such attacks and persecutions are particularly intensified against the struggling teachers. At the same time, employers and governments are attempting to manipulate labor struggles, betting on the role of yellow unions and compromised trade union leaders. It is no coincidence that the ITUC have intensified its attacks, aiming to limit the presence and influence of the WFTU within the global trade union […]
#Politic #Statements

With general assemblies, rallies and campaigning in every workplace, we are working to make the strike river stronger and flood every street again. We take strength from the biggest strike mobilization of the last decades that shook the whole country with the slogan: “their profits or our lives”. From the millions of strikers who on February 28 and in the following days flooded the streets in every major city in the country demanding that those responsible for the crime in Tempe and for every crime against the lives of the people be punished, putting the real culprit in target, the policies of profit for the few that breeds valleys of death for the lives of the many. We strengthen our organisation in the unions. In every workplace, in every factory we are setting up new unions and health and safety committees. We are strengthening the demand for the whole of our lives, for wage increases and collective agreements, for the protection of our lives and for the exclusive public and free provision of all necessary services in health and education. We strengthen solidarity with those who are struggling. We strengthen joint action with the self-employed and small professionals, farmers, pupils and students against our common enemies, the bourgeois state and its governments, the business groups, the imperialist hawks of NATO and the EU. We strengthen our solidarity with all peoples suffering on the fronts of the imperialist wars. We strengthen our demand against the war spending plans of governments and the EU. We strengthen the struggle for a better tomorrow, so that we and our children can live a life with rights and dignity. kriykat
Italy: 1.000 USB delegates against rearmament, for higher wages
https://www.wftucentral.org/italy-1-000-usb-delegates-against-rearmament-for-higher-wages/
A full square, attentive, angry, moved, listened to the terrible story of the death of Patrizio Spasiano, a young apprentice earning 500 euros a month, killed at the age of 19 by an ammonia leak, told by his parents. Thus began the public meeting of the USB delegates in a square a few metres from the Parliament and the offices of the European Union Representation in Italy. In 2024 there were more than 1000 murders at work in Italy and more than 500,000 accidents. The internal war is also part of it, while the external war is dangerously approaching and the people of Rome have strongly denounced it through the voices of workers from all sectors and from all over the country. The war economy is already devastating our country. The public sector workers, who are fighting to reject unacceptable contracts in a country that ranks last in the G20 wage rankings, have been joined by the metalworkers fighting for a real contract and against deindustrialisation, the transport workers fighting against privatisation and for the right to strike, and the drivers and logistics porters fighting for fairer working conditions. Commercial workers, young people working for 6 euros an hour in social cooperatives, seasonal workers have all spoken out about their unsustainable conditions, and the hundreds of thousands of immigrants living and working in Italy have spoken of exploitation and how the powerful are fomenting an internal war against them, blaming the poorest for their situation. And then those fighting for the right to housing, for a fair and decent pension, were greeted with thunderous applause by the young people from schools and universities who, together with the USB strike, had filled the squares and streets of over 30 Italian cities the day before. In all the speeches there was a strong, decisive and uncompromising ‘no’ to rearmament, to a common European defence, to the race to convert factories to produce weapons, to the European Union’s lust for war. There was a strong revival of the mobilisation in support of the Palestinian people and the denunciation of the genocide perpetrated by Israel with the complicit silence of the European Union and the Italian government and politicians. The delegates all agreed and applauded the slogans for internationalism, the confirmation of their strong support to the WFTU, the need to unite more and more the struggles against capital and war at European and world level and the condemnation of the complicity of the yellow unions of the ETUC at national and European level. At the end of this important day, an enthusiastic crowd repeated the call of the USB to organise a big national day of mobilisation against the war.
#Politic #Statements

kriykat
WFTU declaration on World Health Day
https://www.wftucentral.org/wftu-declaration-on-world-health-day/
April 7th is World Health Day. We call upon all trade unions, health unions around the world to commemorate it as it should be. With mobilizations, in all forms, against the degradation and commercialization of the public health system. For a public health system that satisfies the modern needs of the workers. For an exclusively public health system. To say a big NO to the hospital business profit logic. To say a big NO to the huge shortages of health care staff. To say a big NO to the lack of infrastructure and technological equipment. We must say a big NO to the development of entrepreneurship, competitiveness, and profitability, because all this is dangerous for the people, in the health sector, which is saved thanks to the great sacrifice of health doctors, nurses, and paramedics. The bourgeois parties in the European Union recently voted to make the people pay 800 billion euros in the war economy. Now they have decided to grab the reserves of the social security funds, about 10 trillion, to finance the war monopolies with them as well. This will also have a big impact on the workers’ social security rights, trying to raise the retirement age to 74, by attacking pensions, etc. The health unions and the working class as a whole have fought and are fighting for health as a social good and not a commodity. Let us recall the struggles of the pandemic period with the slogan “covered mouths have a voice”. The battles that were fought despite intimidation, authoritarianism, and repression by governments. When capital talks about ” wasteful spending” and ” rationalisation ” of expenditure, ” saving money ” in health, behind all this is the direction of reducing state expenditure on people’s health. This means the people have to dig deep into their pockets and pay a high price to private health care, which earns billions. Along with this, the medicine prices have skyrocketed since they are controlled by the big monopolies that produce whatever they see as profitable, leaving even countries in need without aid (remember COVID-19, where vaccines were exempted from certain countries, and people were dying). It is necessary for the trade unions, the class-oriented workers’ movement, to fight to put the brake on their plans. We must come forward and demand all that is needed to match benefits with popular strata’s needs in prevention, treatment, recovery, rehabilitation, and pharmaceutical care, provided by the state, free of charge. The logic of cost-benefit for the interests of a handful of business groups cannot prevail in the health system. That is why we are clearly saying that we should get rid of the system of exploitation in order to solve the people’s problems. We are intensifying the struggle against the policy that treats our health and human life as a cost, until it is finally overturned. We intensify the struggle to make health a guaranteed social good, not a commodity. For a universal, exclusively public, and free Health-Welfare system. Full, adequate, exclusive state funded public health-welfare units. Massive recruitment of permanent, full-time staff in all sectors and specialties in public hospitals, health centres, and other health and welfare units. The permanent employment of all workers working on temporary, flexible employment relationships (contract workers, auxiliary workers) without terms and conditions. No dismissal of contract workers in cleaning, security, catering. To be hired with permanent employment and full rights. Full staffing of the rapid intervention units with permanent staff as needed. Renew their fleet by deploying the necessary number of ground, water and air ambulances. No involvement of NGOs, contractors, private individuals in Health – Welfare – Special Education and Rehabilitation.
#Politic #Statements

These statements support the jihadist regime, which is the result of the interventions of the imperialist powers that want to seize the wealth of the region. The Secretariat unanimously considers these statements, which praise the new regime and essentially justify even the recent massacres of political opponents and religious minorities, as unacceptable. The views and statements of both that issued in the name of the WFTU Middle East Regional Office and those of the leadership of the GFTU, do not align with nor reflect the positions and decisions of our Federation’s collective bodies. According to official reports from the military regime – junta in Myanmar, more than 1,600 people have already been declared dead. Hundreds of thousands of people in Myanmar live in structures that cannot withstand such tremors. The potential for thousands more casualties looms due to the criminal lack of infrastructure and protective measures. In Thailand, the collapse of a high-rise building under demolition claimed the lives of at least 7 workers, while dozens more remain trapped—once again showing that it is the working class that first of all bears the brunt of every disaster. Basic rights—such as protection from natural disasters, access to safe and dignified housing, and robust public infrastructure—are sacrificed on the altar of profits. The WFTU stands with the workers and peoples of the affected areas and demands immediate international aid that respects the sovereignty and dignity of the peoples, prioritizing the needs of the working class and the poor. We also call for immediate and long-term measures to ensure earthquake-safe housing, protection of workers, and an end to the policies that treat human lives as disposable costs.
#Politic #Statements

This cowardly and violent act is not an isolated incident—it is part of a broader pattern of escalation by organized crime, which has already taken the lives of 26 union leaders in recent years. It represents a direct assault on democracy, on the right to union organization, and on the safety and dignity of workers who struggle daily for better lives. The WFTU demands from the Peruvian government and authorities urgent and effective action to identify and bring to justice those responsible, and to implement immediate and permanent measures to protect trade union leaders and the working class of Peru. The criminal actions of those who seek to silence the trade union movement through terror must be met with the full force of justice and popular resistance. The WFTU stands firmly and unwaveringly beside the working people of Peru and our militant comrades in CGTP and FTCCP. We reaffirm our commitment to defend labor rights and to fight against all forms of violence, intimidation, and repression against the working class. We call upon all WFTU affiliates and friends across the world to raise their voices in solidarity with the Peruvian working class, to condemn this heinous attack, and to organize acts of international solidarity. Let us send a clear message: Workers are not alone. Security and justice for the workers of Peru! Hands off trade union leaders! An injury to one is an injury to all!
#Politic #Statements

After the flattening of Gaza, Israel continues its atrocities in the West Bank, with daily killings of civilians, imprisonments, bombings and destruction of infrastructure. In the last months, the Israeli aggression also expands and escalates in Lebanon, in Syria and in the wider region of the Middle East, with the open violation of borders and the mass devastating bombing of civilians. The Presidential Council expresses its support and solidarity with the Palestinian people and with the people of the region, in their struggle for sovereignty, liberation, and to repel aggression against their countries. The recent statement of the President of the USA regarding the displacement of Palestinians from Gaza, constitutes a continuation of the longstanding and consistent US’s stance and support for the murderous state of Israel and its plans. With his statement, Trump reaffirms in unprecedented cynicism, the USA’s full support of genocide and ethnic cleansing against the Palestinians. The World Federation of Trade Unions strongly denounces and condemns these statements and plans, and reaffirms its unshakeable solidarity with the struggle of the Palestinian people for their right to live in freedom in their own homeland, in the land that they were born. The consistent and principled support and solidarity to the heroic Palestinian people had always been a priority for the international class-oriented trade union movement. It is clear that the only way to secure and consolidate peace and security for the people in Palestine and Israel, but also in the wider Middle East, is to immediately end the Israeli occupation and settlement in the occupied Arab territories, as provided for in the UN resolutions, and to establish an independent Palestinian state on the 1967 borders with East Jerusalem as its capital and guarantee the right of return of Palestinian refugees. For the WFTU is clear that as the imperialist aggression intensifies, our solidarity must intensify too. The workers from all around the world are in a continues struggle of supporting the Palestinian people! The militant trade unions join their voices with the Palestinian people, condemn the imperialist hypocrisy. The WFTU, on the occasion of the 30th of March, observed as the Palestinian Land Day, calls on its affiliates and friends, class-oriented and militant trade unions internationally to organize mobilizations and demonstrations, both in the streets, but in the workplaces as well, under the slogan: “Free Palestine! Since then, the 21st of March is observed as the International Day of Elimination of Racial Discrimination. The World Federation of Trade Unions since its foundation has been at the forefront of the fight against Apartheid in South Africa. As stated in the Rome Declaration of the 18th WFTU Congress, imperialist wars, poverty and misery as a result of the exploitation of the developing countries, the environmental crisis, create millions of refugees and immigrants. Workers who are more vulnerable in the exploitation of the employers and in the unsafe and unregulated working conditions. At the same time, it is clear that the big immigrant flows of the last years, are being instrumentalized by nationalist and neo-fascist forces, in order to reenforce xenophobia and racism. The World Federation of Trade Unions expresses its internationalist solidarity with the more than 280 million migrant workers around the globe, who struggle to survive away from their homelands which they left to escape from the horror of wars and misery, and at the same time are the victims of racism and discrimination. As a fundamental principle, the international class-oriented trade union movement, unites all workers in the struggles for their rights and just demands, regardless of origin, color, language and religion, against capitalist exploitation, racism, fascist ideology and xenophobia. On the occasion of the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination, the WFTU calls upon its affiliated trade unions and the workers of the world in general, to continue and intensify the organized and militant struggles against the system that creates displaced peoples, migrants and refugees, exploitation, inequality and discrimination.
#Politic #Statements

Amar Lagah, just like hundreds of activists of the CGT trade union, is the target of a complaint by the management of a retail chain, and the police have decided to summon him to the Nanterre police station on 26 March 2025: a summons that constitutes a full-scale attack on class-based trade unionism in the retail sector. The Israeli government didn’t show at any point its true will to end the genocide, even throughout the cease fire deal, provoking the deal repeatedly by prohibiting aid from entering Gaza, and the ongoing military operations in the West Bank and Lebanon. The escalation of the genocide with blessing and support of the USA and its allies, reveals once again the hypocrisy and cynicism of the imperialist powers. The WFTU reiterates its solidarity with the heroic people of Palestine, and calls upon its affiliates to intensify the solidarity action with Palestine. The WFTU was and will remain on the side of the Palestinian in their struggle for freedom and peace. End the Genocide!
