AnungIkwe ᐊᓈᓐg ᐃᑴPelicots' daughter presses charges against father jailed in mass rape case<br><a href="https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/c0mwllzzyxlo" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/c0mwllzzyxlo</a><br><br>"Caroline Darian, the daughter of Dominique and Gisèle Pelicot, is pressing charges against her father, accusing him of drugging and raping her - something he has always denied.<br>Last December, Dominique Pelicot was sentenced to 20 years in jail for drugging his ex-wife, Gisèle, raping her and inviting dozens of men to also abuse her over nearly a decade.<br>Pelicot filmed the rapes of his wife, collecting hundreds of videos he neatly catalogued on a hard disk.<br>Among them were also two photos of his daughter, in which Ms Darian, 46, says she is clearly unconscious, sleeping in an unfamiliar position and wearing underwear she doesn't recognise.<br>Dominique Pelicot has offered conflicting explanations for the photos, but has always denied sexually assaulting his daughter.<br>Ms Darian has long said the photos are proof her father also drugged and raped her.<br>"I know that he drugged me, probably for sexual abuse. But I don't have any evidence," she told the BBC in January, when she also talked about the shock of being shown those pictures by police for the first time.<br>The heated courtroom exchanges between Ms Darian and her father were some of the most dramatic in the 16-week trial that shocked France and the world. "I never touched you, never," Pelicot pleaded to his daughter during one session. "You are lying!" Ms Darian shouted back.<br>Ms Darian has previously said she felt she was the trial's "forgotten victim" as, unlike in her mother's case, there was no record of the abuse she is convinced was inflicted upon her.<br>She told Elle France earlier this week that the charges she is pressing against her father were "symbolic" but "in line with what I have said since the start: that I am a victim of chemical submission [drug-facilitated assault] but was never recognised as such".<br>She has hired lawyer Florence Rault to represent her.<br>For many years, Ms Rault has been fighting for justice for two women who were the victims of violent ordeals in the 1990s.<br>One, a young property agent known by the pseudonym Marion, was the victim of an attempted rape in 1999, which Pelicot has admitted to.<br>The other - also an estate agent in her 20s - was raped and murdered in 1991. Pelicot is currently being investigated over that case, but has always denied any involvement.<br>Ms Darian said she saw similarities between her and Marion. "We look strangely alike. She is blonde, her hair is bobbed, we were born the same year... I wanted to meet her lawyer and hear all the details," she told Elle France.<br>In her police complaint, which was quoted by French media, Ms Rault lamented that Ms Darian had never been offered gynecological examinations nor had she been tested for the drugs Pelicot used on his wife.<br>Ms Rault said the investigation had only focused on Gisèle Pelicot and that her client had been treated as a "peripheral victim". She asked the authorities to launch a fresh "serious and in-depth" inquiry.<br>Béatrice Zavarro, Dominique Pelicot's lawyer, told French media that Ms Darian's decision to press charges was "unsurprising given her statements and beliefs during the Avignon trial".<br>She also said that the prosecutors in Avignon, in south-eastern France, said there were insufficient "objective elements" to accuse Pelicot of raping and using chemical submission on his daughter.<br>Forty-nine men were sentenced in December alongside Dominque Pelicot. Dominique Pelicot was sentenced to 20 years in jail last month after a trial that turned his former wife into a feminist icon.<br><br>The Coco website was shut down by the French authorities in June 2024 when an investigation was opened.<br><br>Lawyers representing Steidl declined to comment after his arrest on Tuesday, saying Steidl would “keep his declarations” for the magistrate in charge of the inquiry.<br><br>The website hit the headlines after it was revealed that Pelicot, 72, had used a Coco chatroom called A son insu (without their knowledge) to recruit more than 80 men to rape and sexually abuse his then wife, who he had rendered unconscious with a cocktail of prescription drugs.<br><br>Pelicot was stopped after he was caught filming up the skirts of shoppers in a local supermarket.<br><br>Also convicted in the trial in Avignon that ended in his 20-year jail term were 50 other men who were identified from the tens of thousands of videos and photographs Pelicot made of the abuse of his wife. They were also convicted and sentenced to between three and 15 years. Seventeen men have appealed against their convictions.<br><br>French media reported that Steidl, 44, created the website in 2003 with help from his parents with an investment of €2,000 shortly after he graduated as a computer engineer. It was allegedly intended as a platform for romantic meetings but quickly attracted the attention of drug dealers, paedophiles and sex offenders. After Pelicot’s arrest, the French site was transferred to a URL registered in Guernsey in the Channel Islands.<br><br>Police say they have frozen €5m in bank accounts linked to the site in Hungary, Lithuania, Germany and the Netherlands.<br><br>Steidl, who was born in southern France, is reported to have given up his French nationality in 2023 and taken Italian citizenship. He is said to have been living in eastern Europe.<br><br>Ordering the shutting down of the website last year, Laure Beccuau, the Paris prosecutor said it was implicated in 23,051 criminal cases involving 480 victims. Gisele Pelicot wasn’t an exception.</p><p>We’re still having to endure choruses of “not all men!” Even in the face of overwhelming evidence that it’s a great many men who are hiding in plain sight</p><p>It’s not a stranger accosting you in a dark alley. It’s your husband, boyfriend, coworker, boss, relative</p><p>We cant tell the good from the bad </p><p>The reason the Pelicot trial was so devastating was because it was “every men” who answered her husbands call. </p><p>Men of all ages and backgrounds willingly signed up to rape an unconscious women. </p><p>Many had wives and children of their own. </p><p>Gisele didn’t know - because she believed her husband was a “good man”. She trusted him because you should be able to trust your husband of 50 years. </p><p>You shouldn’t have to worry he’s drugging you and soliciting men to rape you </p><p>Yet inevitably the more we try and explain our fear and rage - the more offended men get that we aren’t adding in a qualifier that not ALL of them are rapists. </p><p>We shouldn’t have to add in that qualifier. We KNOW it’s not all of them… but when it’s this many we have a right to be scared</p><p>When 70,000 men are found in a group chat admitting to rape - the only acceptable response should be “how can we help?” </p><p>When you read that they were sharing tips to drug their wives and girlfriends just like Pelicot? Don’t say “not all men” </p><p>Please recognize until it’s “no men”… none of us will feel safe. There’s simply no way for us to tell anymore. </p><p>Rape culture is so pervasive that it can be literally anyone - so we must guard ourselves accordingly</p><p>Stand with us. Condemn these acts.
