Jesse
I went out to Flemington Rd with a tape measure last night to measure the bike lane.
Bike lane: 132cm
Traffic lane: 265cm

My bicycle handlebars: 66cm
A Ford Ranger: 196cm

132 + 265 - 66 - 196 = 135cm

From this we can see that it is *physically* possible for a Ford Ranger to over take my bicycle in the bike lane while giving a 1m gap if my handlebars are within 35cm of the parked cars and the Ford Ranger is within 35cm from the car beside it.

As a cyclist I'd be very concerned about riding 35cm away from a parked car, dooring is impossible to avoid at that distance and has a significantly larger sideways force (pushing you into the traffic lanes).

I think I'd also be really concerned about driving 35cm away from another car traveling at 60km/h.
It would also be hard to communicate to the driver of the car in the next lane to move over further when you move to legally overtake a cyclist.

#bicycles #melbourne #FlemingtonRd
