It's probably the most confusing part of the <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/Fediverse12" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#Fediverse12</a> for me.

Something we all use today is built by hard work of thousands of people and be sure I'm not only about developers. The community here is hilarious. It's definitely not gonna die silently because now we have __everyone__ on fedi. Yes, there is no week without a yet another drama because X can't agree with Y. But it just proves my point, fediverse is not only paranoid Linux-users anymore. I'm just curious about the future... Newcomers have a choice what subcommunity they want to join, it can be purely political, normie, weeb, tech, artist sides of fediverse or have a mixed bag of opinions in timeline. And that's without groups! :meowgiggle: I would never recommend random people try <a class="hashtag" href="https://expired.mentality.rip/tag/linux" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#Linux</a> or <a class="hashtag" href="https://expired.mentality.rip/tag/xmpp" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#XMPP</a>, I just know their weaknesses and how to overcome them. But Fediverse is different, I'm finally can recommend to people to try it. And that's where I'm gonna talk about software. The software is upgraded since 2013 when we had <a class="hashtag" href="https://expired.mentality.rip/tag/diaspora" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#Diaspora</a>, <a class="hashtag" href="https://expired.mentality.rip/tag/friendica" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#Friendica</a> and <a class="hashtag" href="https://expired.mentality.rip/tag/gnusocial" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#GNUSocial</a> and all of them were just ugly as fuck. I believe that good UI/UX is done through intensive testing and here we are, with millions of people using <a class="hashtag" href="https://expired.mentality.rip/tag/mastodon" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#Mastodon</a>, <a class="hashtag" href="https://expired.mentality.rip/tag/pleroma" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#Pleroma</a>, <a class="hashtag" href="https://expired.mentality.rip/tag/misskey" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#Misskey</a> and etc everyday. I also hope that <a class="hashtag" href="https://expired.mentality.rip/tag/soapbox" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#Soapbox</a> would be successful in it's goal. I don't know how explain that better but if I would send my mother a link to Mastodon instance, I can be sure that she will not ask me how to use this. That's how we get audience. Most people use mobile devices now, desktops are not that common anymore so having a good client is necessary. For me, it's <a class="hashtag" href="https://expired.mentality.rip/tag/tusky" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#Tusky</a> for Mastodon and my fork <a class="hashtag" href="https://expired.mentality.rip/tag/husky" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#Husky</a> for Pleroma users. Yes, I love Pleroma. It not only satisfies my semi-sadistic tech soul, it's also seems to be made with rule that "configurability is silver but great defaults are gold". If you're not afraid of computers and you find yourself caged in Mastodon, then Pleroma is for you. That's all. Finally, I want to say that today's Fediverse is our home. But that's not the end. We must be open to anyone joining Fediverse and we must work with each other to make it even better place to live on.

The fediverse provided me a place to be with people in a way that never felt safe to do before. I have benefited greatly from all the work that goes on behind the scenes to define the protocols, write the software, manage the computers and moderate the spaces. The Fediverse is where I first really learned about free software and user freedom. I had been using GNU/Linux as my primary OS for ten years already, but that was more of a practical and geeky concern. More like having an Amiga instead of a PC, rather than any philosophical stance. GNU put freedom first and in a vocal way if you knew where to look, but laconica/statusnet/gnusocial really showed that free software had the potential to do things proprietary software never could. It was founded on not only software freedom, but also open protocols, network freedom and free culture.

С годами и датами я всегда путаюсь, потому даже не буду пытаться. Итак.Давным-давно, в далёкой-далёкой галактике пошла волна миграции с ICQ на Jabber. И я там был. отличие от многих — остался, и начал смотреть, что ещё с жаббером сделать можно. Ну, транспорты в аську, скайп и чёрта лысого — само собой. Попутно интересовался альтернативами в других областях. Щупал за нежное GnuSocial и Identi.ca, например. Но надолго меня увлёк совсем не федеративный Juick, ибо удобнейшим образом управлялся из jabber-клиента. Там я зависал довольно долго, пока у разраба и одновременно админа Угнича не стало сносить планку (возможно, на фоне ftm перехода, но это не точно), и я свалил на point.im, который, правда, тоже оказался централизованным и огороженным, на фоне чего сравнительно быстро скатился в сраное болото с локальными мемасиками.Дальше была Diaspora*. Три подхода, с разными никами в разное время. Даже с год держал свой собственный pod, но в итоге бросил — меня бесило, что разрабы не собираются улучшать взаимодействие с остальными сетями, на фоне чего сеть неизбежно закисала. Бросил и бросил — вернулся в ВК, сидел-общался... Но шило в жопе и жажда справедливости — они такие — пошёл вновь смотреть, что ещё есть кроме Френдики и GnuSocial. И нашёл Мастодонт и Плерому. Потыкался сначала во вторую — понравилось очень сильно, решил таки сделать что-то для общества и запустить публичный сервис, но Мастодонт счёл более для этого подходящим. И вот оно — здесь.Ключевым фактором, спровоцировавшим моё участие во всём этом, был <a href="https://mastodon.ml/@drq" class="u-url mention" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">@drq</a> — именно его бурная деятельность и бешеная активность убедили меня в том, что двигать Федивёрс среди русскоязычного населения тоже имеет смысл.

SpencerI'm so happy to have found Friendica and the Fediverse. I first discovered Friendica back in 2014, when I was just starting for the first time to think about federated social networks. Now, 6 years later, not only am I running my own instance, I'm also a few projects away from opening it up to my friends and actually hosting my own social network. My biggest contribution to the project is typically dropping in on Github issues to make feature requests, which I'm sure makes me a bit of a gadfly.
