🎧 The Naked Mole Rat: pc.st/1838677279/

— is a renowned #science #podcast from Ilya Kolmanovsky — a scientist-turned-storyteller who once studied animal #evolution and now explores what #science reveals about us as human beings. Originally launched in Russian and now widely acclaimed, the show connects strange creatures, groundbreaking discoveries, and the people behind them to the ways we live and understand ourselves.

Anton Petrov has an interesting video introducing some recent science studies that show how we are causing rapid evolution of species living around us through unintended selection. Species as diverse as foxes and salmon are getting smaller and breeding earlier, among other changes, to better fit into the more fragmented and frequently disturbed habitats that we’ve left for them to live in.

Darwin, Morality, Religion, Politics, Extremism

I just finished reading Darwin’s Dangerous Idea: Evolution and the Meanings of Life (1995) by Daniel Dennett, a difficult book that is probably 30% wordier than it needs to be but was well worth it for me. The subtleties of Dennett’s explanations, and his defense of natural selection as the explanation for life on Earth, go well beyond what I was taught during my bachelor’s and master’s degree programs in the biological sciences. He even challenges what he considers misunderstandings by several academicians of Darwin’s fundamental beliefs as laid out in On the Origins of Species and does a pretty convincing job in my opinion.

A reconstructed skull gives surprising clues to our enigmatic Ancestor X.

According to a new analysis of fossil remains, the shared ancestor of our species, the Neanderthals and the Denisovans lived over a million years ago – more than twice as old as previously believed – which could completely change our understanding of humanity's evolution.

New Scientist · A reconstructed skull gives surprising clues to our enigmatic Ancestor X.By Michael Marshall

Human evolution theory has just been severely shaken by a revolutionary million-year-old skull discovery in China, which suggests human ancestors diverged at least 500,000 years earlier than thought, potentially rewriting our understanding of human origins and challenging Africa-centric evolution theories.
