Which #TicketToRide #game variant should I buy as xmas present for a 9-year-old kid and his (gamer) parents?
@zacchiro Europe is a great variant to get started, and its train station system helps reduce the level of frustration. The Europa 1912 expansion is nice too, once players have grasped the mechanics of the base game. For 2-3 players specifically, I find the Scandinavian variant a lot of fun, and it’s a standalone game unlike most of the other separate boards. Rails & Sails games take longer so it’s not as good for players new to the series.
@skitt I had briefly considered Scandinavia, because 2-3 players is the use case here, but then I read it could be too brutal/punishing for mistakes or bad luck in comparison to other variants. What do you think?
@zacchiro Ah that’s a fair point, it does happen fairly often that players end up stuck on the Scandinavia board — either because routes are taken, with no alternatives, or alternatives that require too many wagons! So I suppose it could be frustrating for new players or players with very competitive opponents (at home we tend to play with a “no unnecessary blocks” rule).
@zacchiro One feature of the Scandinavia set is that it can also be used with the UK + Pennsylvania map, but that’s *really* not a beginner-friendly map so it’s irrelevant here.
@skitt super useful feedback, thanks a lot !
