I'm trying to "cast" my laptop's screen (Debian+GNOME) to my living room TV, either to an HDMI dongle or to the RPi connecting to it (LibreElec+Kodi) *without* resorting to a Chromecast and ideally only using FOSS.

It's revealing to be surprisingly difficult. Any suggestions?

Most promising lead right now is via Airplay, because Kodi appears to support being an Airplay sink, but I haven't found any decent (which includes maintained) Airplay client for Linux.

Another option I'm eyeing is an HDMI Miracast dongle (e.g., amazon.fr/dp/B0CHB2C1W9/ ), but I've found no evidence casting from a Linux desktop (other than Android) would work. I've also been warned about low quality and potential A/V sync issues with Miracast.

As far I can remember, can't be done. Maybe the fastest can be a VNC but audio is missing.
I'd rather stream the screen, then using Kodi as a client. Did you even tried hacking VDO.Ninja? https://vdo.ninja/

@noodles yeah, that's an option I'm considering, but I've been told Miracast is low quality and has A/V sync issues. Experience reports (especially on Linux) welcome!

@zacchiro @zacchiro There was a story about the Gnome Screen cast app recently being updated to support a new protocol (as well as Chromecasts)

gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gnome-n

README says it support miracast
