@live Reminds me of when the people in my town were about to raze 75 acres of woodland to develop a suburb because tax dollars.
My mom (naturalist, local activist) had to explain to them that the impact of more cars/demand for resources would likely offset whatever minor boost they got from having more people. They didn't believe her. (This atrocity got canceled after the town learned this shit show would be taking place right above the town water supply).
People are fucking dumb.

A thousand fucking dollars, man! Sounds like a lot! Well, that averaged to about a stick of gum per Native American, and then they didn't have Manhattan any more.
Granted, the Dutch would have exterminated the fuck out of them and taken it anyway because that's how colonists roll, but the mindset—fixating on the benefit, ignoring the looming downsides—has not changed significantly.
