Inktober is in full swing and I'm not participating, as always. 😏

Here're some aliens with ears though... 👾

@lightone looks effing great! Have you ever made a Friendica theme? I'm sure you'd do a great job 🤗

@andycuccaro Thank you! I haven't tried to rethink Friendica UI yet: Vier theme looks nice in its minimalism, would be faster to build up on it. But it's a big endeavour and I'm postponing it a bit. Would also be interesting to prototype Hubzilla UI. Seeing how Mobilizon will look like (at the end of October?) will probably help with new ideas. Please, join these design challenges. :)

@andycuccaro To @lightone 's defense, creating a #Friendica theme is a massive endeavor because of the myriad of features with their associated templates. We've been starting to integrate the mascot in the current themes though. See friendica.mrpetovan.com/404

@lightone I've been learning some web design, but I'm far from ready to show my stuff. Other than some handdrawn wires, I haven't made anything I'm comfortable with.

@andycuccaro @lightone I'll be a little proselyte here, but the best way to learn is to start looking at and editing other people's code. And we at Friendica need frontend help on the current theme(s) as none of the current development team is comfortable/specialized in it.

@hypolite Ok, I'll take a look at them and see what I can do. I want to learn more of this stuff, but I only have so much time. 😁 Is there some "starting place" for helping Friendica?

@andycuccaro You're welcome, don't hesitate to ask questions, I don't always have time for code, but I always have time for questions and more importantly, answers.

@lightone also, by "design challenges" do you refer to something in particular or to self-proposed challenges? And, on another note, do you have some particular recommended resources to learn and for inspirations?

@andycuccaro I think some newer projects (Mastodon, Pixelfed, PeerTube and others) have started with modern (= relevant to today's "standards") UI in mind. Older projects like diaspora, Friendica, Hubzilla have a large codebase and some of those have a lot of features, that's why I think it's challenging to rethink some of the UI decisions previously made there. The good part is this is FOSS, which means no special teams of designers, so I guess any and all help is welcome :)

@andycuccaro As for inspiration resources, there're many websites-collections of UI screenshots, the only one I have bookmarked is collectui.com Some good examples can be found on Dribbble, although a lot of works there are too fancy ( = would be a nightmare to code)

collectui.comCollect UIDaily inspiration collected from daily ui archive and beyond. Based on Dribbble shots, hand picked, updating daily.

@lightone I get you on the "too fancy" designs, I've seen many of those and they are very pretty, but suuuper complex. Thanks a lot for that link! I'll take a look at it. May I ask one more thing? Do you have any recommended resources on how to *make* the designs? Do you work purely on raster documents (PS/Gimp/Krita)? Or is it more vectorial work (Inkscape/Illustrator)? Or maybe just html/css/js? I have a hard time getting my ideas on screen, and I don't know what'd be best and how to do it.

@lightone looking cute. one thing: might want to remove funkwhale from that graph cause it doesn't actually federate with any other service, so its a bit confusing to have it listed as equal

@liaizon Yep, I had doubts about Funkwhale and GNU Social (one doesn't properly federate yet, the other may soon be cut off unless it adds AP). This can easily be tweaked any time as all images have SVG sources.
